Valanko ni Ramat: Play of Curves: A Reimagined Children’s Playground in Ahmedabad

Valanko ni Ramat, designed by Hsc Designs, is a visionary reinterpretation of children’s play spaces in Ahmedabad. This playful environment, spanning 5,000 ft², combines Montessori-inspired learning principles with sustainable design, creating an immersive space that sparks imagination, adventure, and independence.

A Playground Inspired by Montessori Learning

The design philosophy behind Valanko ni Ramat draws heavily from Montessori education, emphasizing exploration, life skills, and risk-taking. The playground is divided into five distinct zones, each offering unique learning and play experiences. These include:

• Water play zones
• Sand pits for tactile exploration
• Climbing structures
• Swinging and sliding areas
• A central tunnel space

Each zone is carefully crafted to balance safety and excitement, ensuring children can challenge themselves while navigating thoughtfully designed spaces.

Innovative Use of Materials and Sustainable Design

Hsc Designs prioritized sustainability and material reuse throughout the project. Recycled concrete pipes form the central tunnels, mosaics add vibrant color, and MS pipes with thin sections provide secure climbing surfaces tailored to children’s anthropometric proportions. Even tree stumps and wooden logs from old trees were repurposed and painted with the children’s collaboration, fostering a sense of ownership and connection to the space.

The curved jungle gym is engineered to encourage imaginative exploration. The curves, informed by careful study of children’s body dimensions, provide multiple climbing surfaces that are both safe and physically engaging. Thin MS sections make holding, hanging, and climbing accessible, a deliberate departure from conventional commercial playground equipment.

Interactive and Sensory Play Experiences

Valanko ni Ramat incorporates multisensory play elements that stimulate both imagination and auditory senses. Green cone structures in the sandpit double as water elements and echo chambers, enhancing auditory exploration. Wind chimes and misting showers add sensory layers, keeping children cool during Ahmedabad’s hot summers while creating fun interactive experiences.

An outdoor classroom under shaded trees provides opportunities for learning in nature, using painted wooden stubs repurposed from old trees. These spaces cultivate social interaction, storytelling, and collaborative play, enhancing the Montessori-inspired philosophy of hands-on, experiential learning.

A Playground That Connects History and Imagination

Located at one of Ahmedabad’s oldest and most renowned schools, Valanko ni Ramat is a celebration of creativity, sustainability, and child-centered design. Every element: from recycled materials to colorful mosaics: ensures that children can explore, take risks, and develop independence while being deeply connected to the environment.
