Vertigo Terrace by Park Associati: A Suspended Oasis in Milan’s Design District
Vertigo Terrace by Park Associati transforms a Milan rooftop into a dynamic, multifunctional space blending water, light, and urban heritage.
Located atop the iconic nhow Hotel in Milan’s vibrant Zona Tortona Design District, Vertigo Terrace by Park Associati transforms a rooftop into an immersive architectural and sensory experience. Completed in 2023, this 753-square-meter terrace renovation redefines hospitality design, blending water, transparency, and multifunctionality into a dynamic urban oasis that reflects the creative pulse of Milan.

A Vision Suspended Between Architecture and Illusion
The design brief called for a “vertigo effect”—a sensation of suspension and visual immersion. Park Associati responded with a bold architectural gesture: a transparent pool cantilevered from the terrace edge, creating a mesmerizing dialogue between gravity, water, and the cityscape. Contained by a single glass plane, the pool appears to hover weightlessly, offering guests a thrilling perspective of Milan below.
Complementing the main pool are two circular basins that serve dual purposes—as reflective water features and as functional platforms for events. These versatile installations can be drained and adapted, enabling the terrace to host everything from fashion shows to aperitifs and private functions.

Industrial Memory Reinterpreted
The terrace sits atop a building that was once part of a 1920s General Electric industrial complex. Park Associati embraces this history through a contemporary reinterpretation of industrial design elements—juxtaposing solid and void, concave and convex, and using materials that reflect the tactile heritage of the site.
The studio’s approach respects and reactivates the original architecture, maintaining a strong connection to the surrounding urban fabric while injecting modern luxury into the experience. Textured surfaces, exposed brick, metal details, and the interplay of rounded volumes with strict geometries create a tactile and visual contrast that anchors the project in place and time.

Reflections, Light, and Experiential Design
Central to the terrace experience is its interaction with light and materiality. The project explores reflections, transparency, and chromatic intensity—concepts captured poetically by DSL Studio's photographic documentation. Images highlight the duality between minimalism and expressionism, between abstraction and concrete form. Bright tones contrast with subdued surfaces, while the pool water refracts urban reflections into ever-changing patterns.
The architectural detailing—seen in stairways, handrails, columns, and facades—enhances the space’s immersive quality. These details become more than functional elements; they are graphic symbols that frame an evolving experience.

Multifunctionality and Urban Integration
Vertigo Terrace is not just a rooftop—it’s a platform for transformation. By designing modular water features and open-plan layouts, Park Associati created a flexible hospitality environment that evolves with time, season, and function. This adaptability reinforces the venue’s identity as a landmark for international design, fashion, and creative events in Milan.
Through architectural precision and artistic vision, Vertigo Terrace brings together the themes of urban regeneration, contemporary hospitality, and industrial heritage, crafting a new typology of immersive, elevated public space.
