 A Contemporary Residence in Dubai

Architectural Concept: Altered Materiality

The design philosophy behind Villa K revolves around “altered materiality” – a concept that harmonizes different materials in a cohesive yet dynamic spatial composition. The project emphasizes the natural beauty of marble, carefully selected and sculpted to define textures, patterns, and atmospheres throughout the home.

IAIA’s Head of Design, Darine Jabeili, explains:

“We wanted to show what can be done with marble. Each space reflects depth and varied tones, creating unique atmospheres that align with the client’s lifestyle.”

The villa’s interiors are influenced by the four natural elements – earth, water, fire, and air – which guided material choices, lighting design, and spatial flow to create a narrative experience of vision and touch.

Ground Floor: Marble, Wood, and Ambient Light

Upon entering Villa K, residents are greeted by a double-height reception and staircase lobby, showcasing a bold use of marble. The book-matched marble floors and fluted marble walls add depth, while oak wood accents complement the natural stone veins, adding warmth and texture.

Unique suspended lighting fixtures float above the reception, providing sculptural and ambient illumination. The staircase, wrapped in silver travertine, creates a dramatic interruption in the marble narrative, with integrated lighting enhancing both the steps and walls.

The ground floor balances cold marble tones with warm wood textures, achieving a harmonious interplay of materials, light, and space.

Second Floor: Private Bedrooms and Connection

The second floor features a bridge spanning the double-height entrance, connecting multiple bedrooms. Each room is designed as a distinct spatial narrative, with unique marble, wood, and natural material finishes reflecting light, vegetation, and textures.

The material palette emphasizes sustainability and nature-inspired design, incorporating leftover marble pieces into furniture, technical areas, and even the parking space, creating a seamless connection between material efficiency and luxury design.

Material Palette: Natural Stone and Sustainability

Marble is the star of Villa K, used not only for floors and walls but also as a storytelling medium, shifting tones and textures in each area. Complementary materials include:

  • Oak veneer wood accents
  • Silver travertine cladding
  • Natural lighting and sculptural fixtures

The design highlights eco-conscious practices, reusing residual materials and selecting elements that celebrate nature while maintaining a luxurious aesthetic.
