Digital Art Centre
Digital Art Centre
The main concept of the exhibition center for digital art was to create a building inspiring artists to create diverse, creative digital exhibitions. Exhibiting art installations is possible thanks to the rooms of various forms, as well as the structure of the building.
Due to the suburban nature of the surroundings and the close vicinity of single-family housing, the building took the form of a block, a large part of which is hidden in an escarpment. The project takes advantage of the natural slope of the terrain to create large exhibition spaces without dominating the surroundings. The level visible from the street side, as well as from the side of single-family housing, visually resembles a pavilion. It is a representative form, informing about the character of the building, but due to the lightness of the structure, it does not completely obscure the view of the greenery behind the building.
During the creation of the object, many attempts were made to combine the design assumptions - regarding internal exhibition spaces, the correlation of the object with the terrain, and the way the object works. There were many possibilities to create the main entrance to the building, its surroundings, as well as internal spaces. The architectural form of the object of such a functional nature, which harmonizes with the surrounding context, was also debatable.
The exhibition center for digital art aimed to connect with getting to know the possibilities offered by digital art. This analysis was the basis for creating a building structure that allowed the artists' projects to be presented.
In addition to his analysis of digital art and the space in which it is possible to present it, the author consulted several visual artists. The interview showed that large spaces where a given exhibition can be viewed from different perspectives work best.
The design uses the natural slope of the terrain simply and functionally. The program of the facility is divided into zones: the highest floor as the main entrance to the building and the technical function, along with the external terrace, the floor with operating functions, and the main exhibition and attractions floor, from which we can directly go out to the external space, where we can find a multimedia fountain. It was also ensured that the exhibitions could appear in any type of space. Technical and communication functions are located on the side of the slope.
The primary construction material is reinforced concrete - a raw, unobtrusive material that provides a framework for multicolored digital exhibitions. The roof of the building is based on a steel structure. The outdoor art installation in the form of a mesh of small elements was designed of wood, which warms the image of the building.
To achieve the assumed goal, various arrangements of the various functions of the building, in particular the exhibition functions, were created and the correlations between them were analyzed. It was discussed how the various forms of exhibitions or activities interact.
As the function develops, it is possible to use the building's surroundings to a greater extent. Along with the development of the surrounding areas, the project offers the possibility of creating a public space in the lower part of the area. It has a chance to become a place for residents and people visiting the building.
The interior of the building is characterized by an open plan. The structure based on columns makes it possible to re-arrange the building for a different function. Staircases and service rooms located in the northern part of the projection form the basis of any function. The south-opening space can be flexibly arranged.
