A Minimalist Sanctuary Reimagining the Japanese Sauna Experience

Located in Takeo, Japan, OND SAUNA by Amane Architecture is a 117-square-meter wellness retreat designed to explore the delicate balance between intimacy and neutrality. Completed in 2024, the project challenges traditional notions of social proximity within public bathing culture, translating them into a spatial language rooted in natural materials, sensory harmony, and architectural rhythm.

Captured by photographers Kazuyoshi Miyamoto (fusion graphic) and Akinobu Kawabe (helico), the project highlights how architecture can facilitate both community and solitude through its spatial and material composition.

Walls of Neutrality: Redefining Social Boundaries

In Japan, public saunas are often perceived as places of solitude rather than social gathering. Amane Architecture approached this cultural nuance with sensitivity, proposing a design that fosters shared experience without forcing intimacy.

The architects describe the concept as creating “walls of neutrality” — partitions that connect and divide at the same time. These walls mediate proximity, allowing strangers to coexist in close quarters without discomfort. The interplay between visibility, light, and shadow encourages quiet communication, forming an environment where people feel part of a collective rhythm while maintaining personal space.

Verticality, Forest, and Flow

The design draws inspiration from the vertical rhythm of the surrounding forest, translating it into the architectural structure itself. Slender vertical walls echo the trunks of nearby trees, forming visual and spatial continuity between interior and exterior.

The gaps between these walls act as breathing spaces — moments of pause that invite natural light, forest views, and gentle air circulation into the sauna. This careful calibration of openness and privacy creates a meditative environment that connects users with nature while maintaining the soothing enclosure of a traditional sauna.

Spatial Harmony and Material Sensibility

Materiality plays a central role in the project’s calming atmosphere. Natural wood, chosen for its texture and scent, enhances sensory immersion and reflects the sauna’s emphasis on warmth and well-being. The subtle grain of the timber, illuminated by filtered daylight, reinforces the connection between the body, the environment, and architecture itself.

Inside, spaces unfold gradually, leading visitors through a sequence of thermal experiences — from the heated sauna chamber to cooling zones that overlook the tranquil forest beyond. Every element is designed to promote mental clarity and emotional balance, aligning with the Japanese philosophy of wa, or harmony.

A New Typology for Communal Wellness

With OND SAUNA, Amane Architecture proposes a new typology for communal wellness architecture — one that bridges cultural boundaries between solitude and sociability. The design encourages users to rediscover a sense of belonging through spatial empathy rather than direct interaction.

By translating human emotion into architectural form, the project transforms a simple bathing ritual into an act of shared mindfulness, subtly redefining how community and privacy coexist in contemporary Japanese culture.
