Location-Inspired Climate-Responsive Design

Wenzhou, known for its mild climate, inspired the architects to create a design that bridges indoor and outdoor environments seamlessly. The site’s lush tree canopies served as the foundation for the design concept, fostering outdoor activities and a closer bond with nature.

Atelier FCJZ divided the International Exchange Center into eight individual buildings, each serving a specific purpose:

  • Four Dormitory Blocks
  • Activity Center
  • Library
  • Teaching Building
  • Lecture Hall

Four-Layer Spatial Design

The architectural approach embraces a four-layer spatial arrangement:

1. Central Courtyard

Open-air spaces at the heart of the campus promote interaction and a direct connection with nature.

2. Air-Conditioned Zone

Fully enclosed indoor areas offer comfortable environments for academic and social activities.

3. Veranda (Semi-Indoor)

Transitional spaces provide shade and ventilation, creating a comfortable middle ground between indoor and outdoor settings.

4. Under the Overhang (Semi-Outdoor)

These areas blend natural light, ventilation, and protection from weather, encouraging outdoor use even during inclement conditions.

Tree Canopy-Inspired Roof Design

A standout feature of the Wenzhou Medical University International Exchange Center is its umbrella-inspired roof design, which aligns the eaves of the eight structures into a unified "tree canopy."

  • 10-meter cantilevered roofs provide extensive shade and shelter.
  • Sky slits—50 cm-wide gaps between buildings—allow natural light and rainwater to flow into the Gray Spaces, enhancing the connection with nature.

The roof design not only offers a striking visual identity but also supports sustainable and climate-responsive principles.

Versatile Spaces for Diverse Activities

The campus prioritizes flexibility, catering to various activities:

  • Quiet study spaces and semi-private zones encourage individual focus.
  • Open-air halls formed by overhanging eaves host public events like concerts, sports activities, and communal gatherings.

This design fosters a vibrant campus life, encouraging interaction and collaboration among students and faculty.

Health Benefits and Architectural Design

Insights from Wenzhou Medical University’s ophthalmologists highlighted the ocular health benefits of natural light, particularly when filtered through tree canopies or deep eaves. These findings influenced the architectural features, ensuring the complex supports not only academic growth but also the well-being of its occupants.
