Located in the historic village of Weipo on the outskirts of Luoyang, the White Is Good Shop is a compact yet impactful retail installation designed by designRESERVE. Completed in 2024, this 50-square-meter pop-up store introduces a fresh architectural intervention within a culturally significant setting characterized by traditional courtyards, kiln houses, and an old village marketplace.

Weipo, known for its preserved architectural heritage, has recently become a focal point for cultural revival. Boutique shops, cultural venues, and community-oriented programs are gradually transforming the village into a lively public destination. Within this evolving landscape, the White Is Good Shop serves as both a retail environment and a contemporary architectural landmark that bridges tradition and modernity.

Designed for the lifestyle brand HOWHITE, which is recognized for its minimalistic aesthetic and eco-friendly packaging, the shop reflects the brand’s philosophy through architectural simplicity, material experimentation, and spatial clarity.


Revitalizing Weipo Village Through Contemporary Retail Design

The White Is Good Shop occupies a strategic location facing the entry plaza of Weipo’s historic marketplace. This placement allows the building to function not only as a retail space but also as a community gathering point.

The surrounding environment is dominated by traditional Chinese village architecture featuring grey barrel-tiled roofs, brick decorations, and historic courtyard layouts. Instead of replicating these historical elements, the architects chose to create a subtle architectural dialogue between past and present.

The shop’s pitched roof sits slightly lower than neighboring heritage structures, respecting the existing skyline and maintaining visual harmony within the village context. At the same time, its contemporary geometry introduces a striking yet restrained contrast, reinforcing the village’s cultural revitalization through thoughtful modern architecture.

Architectural Form: A Contemporary Roof in Dialogue with Tradition

One of the most distinctive architectural features of the White Is Good Shop is its abstract trapezoidal cone-shaped roof. While inspired by the traditional sloped roofs of surrounding buildings, the form is simplified into a lightweight and contemporary silhouette.

Constructed using twin-wall polycarbonate panels combined with translucent fabric, the roof performs multiple functions. During the day, it softly filters natural light into the interior, creating an evenly illuminated retail environment. At night, the building transforms into a glowing lantern-like structure, turning the shop into a visual beacon within the village marketplace.

This lighting strategy not only enhances the architectural identity of the store but also reinforces its role as a public attraction and social hub.

Transparency and Public Interaction

The ground floor facade is designed with floor-to-ceiling glass curtain walls on three sides, allowing uninterrupted visual connections between the interior retail space and the surrounding village streets.

This high level of transparency encourages interaction between visitors, passersby, and shoppers, making the shop feel welcoming and accessible.

Beneath the extended roof eaves, a wide bench-like platform serves as a transitional zone between public and private spaces. This architectural gesture encourages people to sit, gather, and observe the activity around the marketplace.

The result is a retail environment that extends beyond commercial functions and contributes to the social life of the village.

Interior Concept: Exploring the Complexity of White

Although the project is called White Is Good Shop, the interior design intentionally explores the idea that white is not a single color but rather a spectrum of subtle tones and textures.

The design team carefully selected ordinary materials, each with slightly different finishes, to create a layered composition of whites. Surfaces, structures, and display elements all contribute to a refined palette that reflects the brand’s philosophy of minimalism, responsibility, and restrained consumerism.

The existing concrete structure of the building is left exposed, providing a raw and honest backdrop that contrasts with the brand’s signature clean and orderly aesthetic.

This juxtaposition between raw materials and refined retail displays creates a spatial atmosphere that feels both authentic and contemporary.

Modular Display System for Flexible Pop-Up Retail

To support the brand’s frequent pop-up events and traveling exhibitions, designRESERVE developed a modular frame system that functions both as a structural element and a display framework.

The system is composed of custom-made 30 × 30 millimeter aluminum frames combined with standardized plexiglass partitions. These lightweight components are designed for easy transportation, assembly, and reuse in different locations.

At the center of the shop, the modular structure forms a 2.85 × 2.85 × 2.85 meter cube, positioned at a 45-degree angle relative to the building’s axis. This rotation enhances interior circulation and creates dynamic viewing angles throughout the space.

The installation acts as a “house within a house,” featuring operable doors and windows that metaphorically represent an ideal home filled with carefully curated objects from HOWHITE.

This flexible design approach supports both retail displays and temporary exhibitions while maximizing sustainability and reusability.

Sustainability and Responsible Design

Sustainability played an important role in the architectural strategy of the White Is Good Shop.

The modular aluminum structure and plexiglass components allow the shop’s display system to be easily dismantled and reused for future pop-up installations. This approach reduces material waste and aligns with the brand’s commitment to environmentally responsible consumer products.

Additionally, the lightweight roof structure improves daylight performance, reducing the need for artificial lighting during daytime operations.

Through these subtle but thoughtful design decisions, the project demonstrates how temporary retail architecture can embrace sustainability while maintaining strong aesthetic identity.
