Wonderland Cafe by XIAO.DESIGN: A Playful Blend of Minimalism, Light, and Curved Forms in Suzhou
Wonderland Cafe by XIAO.DESIGN blends curved forms, minimalist interiors, and textured facades to create a playful spatial experience.
Nestled away from the bustling urban streets of Suzhou, Wonderland Cafe by XIAO.DESIGN reimagines a compact site into a captivating space that fuses architecture, emotion, and sensory design. With a footprint of only 80 square meters, the café pushes the spatial boundaries of what a small coffee shop can be, offering a layered experience where simplicity meets sculptural expression.

A Facade of Circular Imagination
The original entrance and window system was stripped back and replaced with a striking feature: five horizontally aligned circular openings, stretched into a three-dimensional form that bridges the exterior and interior. These curved glass elements become the defining identity of the café’s modern architectural facade, creating a playful rhythm that visually and spatially links inside and out.
Framed by low-rise neighborhood buildings, the café's rammed earth-textured facade and firewood-toned paint offer a warm, grounded contrast to the curved glass. Above, cylindrical skylights pierce the roof, inspired by traditional chimney silhouettes, enhancing natural light while adding vertical articulation. These vertical elements shift from dense to sparse to subtly define the space's internal zoning and direct foot traffic.

Interwoven Booths and Spatial Layers
Inside, three circular booths are embedded between columns—two nestled indoors and one open to the exterior—providing spatial continuity across thresholds. Transparent glazing keeps visual cohesion intact while the seating arrangement evokes a sense of discovery and intimacy.
A sunken soft ceiling calibrates the natural light entering through the glazed facade, offering both spatial stability and ambient warmth. This approach balances transparency and enclosure, ideal for a café experience that thrives on both vibrancy and comfort.

Materials, Mood, and Movement
The material palette combines light gray finishes with exposed birchwood surfaces, creating a serene, modernist backdrop. The bar’s flowing curves are accentuated by a wave-like chandelier, drawing inspiration from ocean motion and continuing the theme of fluid form. In a corner of the café, terraced seating reminiscent of a music theatre introduces verticality and sociability, designed ergonomically for relaxed lounging.
The spatial narrative is further enhanced by the continuous relationship between adjacent colors, organic volumes, and sharp geometries, creating what feels like a sculpted box of light and shadow. A floating staircase weaves through the space, reinforcing vertical flow and offering dynamic sightlines throughout.

A Dual Experience: Daylight and Neon
By day, natural light and soft tones create a tranquil coffeehouse ambiance. As night falls, the space transforms. Neon lighting with high saturation and contrast brings an urban vibrancy to the interiors—activating the café as a nocturnal landmark. This dual character positions Wonderland Cafe as both a peaceful daytime retreat and a glowing evening destination, reflecting the rhythm of the city itself.
