Programs and Facilities: A Harmonious Blend of Art and Nature

The Yichang Grand Theater houses a plethora of state-of-the-art performance spaces, including a 1600-seat grand theater, a 1200-seat concert hall, a 400-seat black box, and two outdoor theaters—one on the rooftop and another by the water. With additional facilities like educational spaces, event and exhibition areas, rehearsal rooms, coffee shops, restaurants, and observation decks, the project is designed to be an open and vibrant public space at all times

Inspired by the Spirit of Water: An Ever-changing Form

OPEN's founding partner, Mr. Li Hu, explains that the theater's design is inspired by the spirit of water that defines Yichang City. The fluid form of the building is a result of the interaction between various elements, such as internal organizations, environmental conditions, and public spaces that weave in and out, above and below, creating a sense of balance and inclusiveness.

Environmentally Sensitive Design: Building to Protect

In response to the Yangtze River Conservation Plan and the global climate crisis, OPEN's founding partner Huang Wenjing emphasizes the importance of a sensitive approach to the natural conditions surrounding the site. The partially floating building allows the natural flow from the mountainous inland to the waterfront, minimizing the building's footprint and excavation work.

Embracing Sustainability and Eco-friendly Strategies

The Yichang Grand Theater incorporates various passive and active strategies to contribute to the sustainable development of the peninsula. The floating theater provides spaces filled with natural light and ventilation while offering opportunities for artists to interact with the public.

Expressive and Performative Facade

The building's organic form is punctuated by openings of various shapes, creating a rich and dynamic exterior. The matte anodized aluminum tubes on the exterior surface capture the subtle interplay of light and shadow throughout the day, giving the impression of liquid metal.

Double-layered Facade and Microclimate Regulation

The inland-facing part of the building features a double-layered facade, with the distance between the two layers varying to create diverse in-between spaces, including a large semi-outdoor garden and cascading terraced gardens, which help regulate the building's microclimate.

Utilizing Natural Ventilation

The lobby and circulation spaces facing the river benefit from natural ventilation introduced through cavities in the facade, allowing the building to breathe in its environment.
