Collective Housing
Shared and communal residential design, from collective tower typologies and urban retrofits to co-living hubs and sustainable apartment blocks.
Collective housing organises dwellings around shared spaces, services and resources rather than only private units. Designers working in this area balance individual privacy with communal life, and address how shared kitchens, courtyards, circulation and common rooms shape daily routines and social ties.Work on this topic in the community spans new builds and the retrofitting of existing blocks, in cities including Hong Kong, Mexico City, Murcia, Koto and Guayaquil. Projects examine how collective approaches can extend to greenery, material reuse, movable partitions and gender-aware planning in dense urban contexts.
