Paddles of the Past: Adaptive Reuse of Decommissioned River Vessels for the Ecological and Cultural Restoration of Dhaka

The project 'Paddles of the Past' restores this past, transforming the derelict steamers and boats into living documents of riverside history and using their hulls to restore ecological balance. There is no waste anywhere: history turns into habitat and memory turns into monitoring, with the healing of a river forgotten until now beginning with each and every current."
The History of the Maritime Cultural Centre in Nowy Port
The Maritime Cultural Centre (MCC) building was one of the few elements realized as part of Danuta Weirowska’s master plan. It was intended to serve the districts that were, at the time, most neglected in terms of cultural and educational infrastructure, namely Nowy Port, Letnica, Brzeźno, and Wisłoujście. The Cultural Centre was named “Maritime” due to the strong connection of the local community with the sea, the port, and the shipyard.

The survey aimed to identify the needs and expectations of Gdańsk residents regarding the Nowy Port district and the Maritime Cultural Center located there. The results are intended to serve as a basis for reflecting on the district’s future development directions and for adjusting the Center’s activities to the real needs of the local community.
