Convalescence
The world has been flooded, wiping out the majority of the earth's population. The water levels rise and lower at drastic rates making the land inhabitable. Safety was found in the city of Manhattan.
The environmentalist tried to warn the world about the apocalypse that would be unleashed if the earth was not properly taken care of. Nobody listened… Now due to the consequences of negligence, the entirety of the earth's surface is submerged in water. The ice caps from both the North and South pole have completely melted, causing a drastic change in the water levels. The land has become inhabitable, there is no fresh water, and there is no electricity and it is up to the community to use its available resources to survive. Due to the rising and lowering of the water levels the community has found refuge in the tallest skyscrapers, occupying the upper levels as new ground space since the previous ground space is lost due to the flooded state of the world. The environmentalists have created a plan that will help bring some type of normality to the new way of living. In order for the community to survive, it was agreed that the community types needed were, farmers, medical, education, musicians, and expansionist. Farmers are going to be growing food and construction plants to keep the community afloat. Since the land is inhabitable, the farmers will be using the hydroponics method to grow the plants, since the use of soil will not be necessary. Medical, such as doctors and nurses will be available to treat anyone that gets sick or suffers an injury. There will be educators as well. They will be teaching the community about the community types and will help train the people so that they can have an active role in the community and help it grow. The area of Times Square is known for always being full of life and always being in movement. Although space is limited, the community will have musicians so that - that aspect of Times Square stays true to what it once was. Lastly, the community will need expansionists. The expansionists will go out on boats and set sail to other parts of the city in which the community can expand.
The community’s form of circulation will be through the use of bridges. The bridge will connect all of the buildings occupied by the community. It will serve as a link so that the community needs be intertwined with one another. The bridge will be two stories tall. The upper level will be used for rapid transportation, such as carts for people to transport to the medical building. The lower level of the bridge will be for pedestrian use. The bridge will offer views all around the site for the community to enjoy. In need of expansion, bridges will be constructed with the same concept as the one designed. It will link other buildings together so that the community can get to multiple places.
In order for the community to function, the essentials are needed, fresh water and electricity. The community has designed a water purifier that is connected to the bridge. The water Purifying system is called, “Cistern”. When the water levels are at the highest point, the bottom disk of the Cistern is submerged under the water, collecting salt water so that it can be sent to the middle disk of the Cistern. The middle disk will have the water purifier. It will take the salt water and pass it through several filters which will purify it and will send it to the last disk. The last disk will be in function as a water collector. All the salt water that has been purified will be collected for the use of people.
To meet the electricity needs of the community, a wind turbine has been designed. The community is housed at the top of the skyscrapers which means that the strong winds can be a disadvantage. With the turbines, the winds are going to be used as an advantage because they will help electricity be possible. The wind turbine was designed to be as flexible as the wind. That way no matter what way the winds blow, electricity will be made regardless.
Convalescence will aide the commence of a new era. The community will use the available resources to create new ones in order to survive. Times Square is known for people wanting to be there to welcome the new year, now people work together to welcome a new ear of life.
