Architectural Vision

Preserving Historic Character

The original bungalow served as a canvas for the transformation:

  • Original woodwork, windows, and flooring were meticulously restored to honor its architectural heritage.
  • Collaboration with Liz MacPhail Interiors ensured a seamless blend of historical and modern interior design elements.

Introducing Modern Spaces

At the rear of the house, a deteriorated porch gave way to a striking new addition:

  • A kitchen and dining nook connect the historic home to the contemporary extension.
  • A half-story step-down in the new wing creates elevated ceilings and introduces expansive glazing for natural light.
  • The addition features a family room and master suite with direct access to the lush backyard.

Contrasting Old and New

The project explores a dialogue between the historic home and its modern counterpart:

  • The addition’s stucco exterior echoes the soft green tones of the original wood siding.
  • Inspired by sculptural forms, the addition contrasts the planar simplicity of the wood-framed bungalow, resembling a carved stone block split open.

Seamless Transitions

A series of sequential spaces transition from the warm, enclosed ambiance of the historic architecture to the bright, open expanses of the addition. Notable features include:

  • A frameless corner window in the kitchen, offering uninterrupted views of the garden.
  • A glazed side entry, merging the old and new with natural light.

  • Original features like refurbished wood flooring are complemented by modern fixtures and finishes.
  • A neutral palette and thoughtful furnishings enhance the natural flow between spaces.

Landscaping and Outdoor Connection

The Maiden House prioritizes outdoor connectivity:
