10º House by STUDIE: Contemporary Tropical Architecture in Jakarta
10º House by STUDIE blends tropical design, sculptural concrete, warm timber, open-plan interiors, natural light, and biophilic elements in Jakarta.
The 10º House, designed by the acclaimed Indonesian architecture firm STUDIE, represents a masterful blend of contemporary tropical design and material authenticity. Its name derives from the 10-degree tilt of the façade, a subtle yet deliberate architectural gesture that aligns the house to the east, creating a dynamic interaction with natural light. This project is a renovation of an existing structure, transforming it into a modern home that balances aesthetic sophistication with tropical functionality.

Exterior Design: Monolithic Elegance
The exterior of 10º House showcases board-formed concrete façades, providing a raw and tactile texture that reflects the imprint of wooden formwork. This material choice emphasizes material honesty and craftsmanship, grounding the house in a robust and sculptural aesthetic. The interplay of solid and void, achieved through carefully positioned apertures and deep recesses, allows natural daylight to penetrate interiors while maintaining privacy from the street.

The house’s massing is geometric and sculptural, with volumes that interlock and cantilever, producing dynamic shadow play. Vertical wooden cladding contrasts the rough concrete, softening its industrial austerity with natural warmth. A minimalist entrance garden, featuring a single tree, provides a serene transition from outdoor to indoor spaces, reinforcing the connection to nature.

Interior Design: Light, Fluidity, and Biophilic Integration
Inside, the home continues its refined tropical architecture with an open-plan layout. The living, dining, and kitchen areas are organized around inner courtyards and sliding glass partitions, enhancing visual connectivity and spatial fluidity. Skylights and full-height openings modulate natural light, creating a dynamic play of brightness and shadow that evolves throughout the day.

Biophilic design principles are integrated throughout the home, with greenery in interior courtyards improving cross-ventilation, thermal comfort, and human well-being in Jakarta’s tropical climate.
Material continuity is key to the home’s narrative. Polished concrete floors, warm timber ceilings, and crisp white walls provide a minimalist yet elegant backdrop. The central kitchen island, constructed from exposed concrete with embedded lighting, doubles as both a functional centerpiece and sculptural element. Linear wooden slats with concealed lighting on the ceiling add rhythm and a subtle warmth to the minimalist interior.

Private Areas: Thoughtful Detail and Playful Accents
Private spaces, including bedrooms and bathrooms, carry the same attention to detail. Bathrooms juxtapose cool gray stone surfaces with bold, artistic accents, such as a turquoise cylindrical basin, transforming utilitarian spaces into serene retreats. Indirect lighting enhances depth and highlights textures, creating a soothing and elegant atmosphere throughout the home.

A Harmonious Dialogue of Space and Material
The 10º House exemplifies how contemporary tropical architecture can harmonize with its context. Its design balances mass and void, opacity and transparency, nature and material, while remaining climatically responsive and human-centered. Each space flows seamlessly into the next, unified by a restrained material palette and a sophisticated architectural ethos that celebrates both structure and serenity.
