Nestled within the lush Pacoche rainforest in Ecuador, A Shelter in the Forest by Espacio & Luz Arquitectos embodies the perfect fusion of architecture and nature. Surrounded by dense vegetation, the site enjoys a unique microclimate shaped by sea breezes and frequent fog, offering visitors a serene environment where the calls of howler monkeys and tropical birds underscore the immersive natural experience. The site’s dynamic climate, alternating between misty, rainy days and bright, sunny afternoons, inspired a design that responds to the environment while creating a tranquil retreat for its occupants.


A Vision Rooted in Nature and Feng Shui
The client’s vision was clear: a cabin that would harmoniously blend into the forest while respecting the delicate ecosystem. Initially inspired by treehouse designs, the project evolved into a ground-level shelter that integrates seamlessly with its surroundings. Guided by feng shui principles, the architects carefully oriented entrances, rooms, and windows to align with the natural energy of the site. Every design decision—from the arrangement of doors and windows to the selection of sustainable materials—fosters balance, harmony, and a connection with the environment.


Architectural Approach: Minimalism Meets Natural Materials
At the core of the design is a philosophy that treats the cabin as an extension of the forest. A minimalist approach emphasizes simplicity, while natural materials like wood, brick, and steel provide structural strength and warmth. The cabin rests on a cement plinth, adapting to the terrain’s slope to prevent humidity damage and enhance durability. This careful integration ensures that the structure complements the forest rather than dominates it.

Inside, the use of pine planks and polyurethane foam panels ensures optimal insulation, while a sloped roof clad in cubiteja tiles protects the shelter from heavy rain and tropical weather. Large panoramic windows frame the surrounding forest, filling interiors with natural light and allowing occupants to feel fully immersed in the forest’s serene atmosphere.

A Shelter in the Forest is more than a cabin—it’s a sanctuary designed for reflection, introspection, and rejuvenation. Its thoughtful integration with the environment creates a space where architecture and nature coexist harmoniously.
