ACCORD
CONSERVATORY FOR PERFORMING ARTS, BERLIN
• HISTORY
Known as the land of ideas and the arts, Germany has hosted culture in various forms since the middle of the century. Berlin is the most popular and largest city in Germany. The property for the conservatory is located within one of the main commercial parts of Berlin. The conservatory will act as a balanced environment to connect with the arts, in the hustle and bustle of the busy city. This will be a permanent and accessible place for professionals, students and people from all walks of life. Another key factor for the building is the Berlin Performing Arts Festival, which celebrates the diversity of the city's independent performing arts community.
• SITUATIONAL AND URBAN PLANNING SOLUTION
There are two central entrances for visitors, which face the street. To the south, behind the building itself, there is a richly landscaped backyard to it, which connects with the environment outside the property, where there is an outdoor stage.
• FUNCTIONAL SOLUTION
The building is divided into several sectors. On the first level /+0.00 m/, is the first, which is the public area - the central lobby, restaurant with kitchen and storage, cafe library, several recreation areas, two receptions, cloakroom, bathrooms, exhibition space.
The second sector is the study sector, which is on two floors - it is located immediately after the exhibition space. There is a corridor space from which students can enter one of the two dance or four music rooms for rehearsals and training. On the second level is the office part too.
The third sector is that of the concert hall. At the level + 0.00 m a you can enter the balcony of the hall, which has 115 seats. Downstairs is the main hall with 276 seats. At the back of the stage there are dressing rooms and changing rooms, bathrooms, a warehouse with a ladder and an elevator leading to higher or lower levels.
At level - 3.15 m is the underground parking and techninal rooms.
• VOLUME SOLUTION
The building is divided into four main volumes. The first is the public, which is only on one level. Then there is the study - on 2 levels. The third volume is that of the concert hall and the fourth is the volume with the office area - the offices, which visually connects the study volume and that of the hall.
The volume of the classrooms is solved with decorative rotating panels, which are controlled from the inside of the building. They play the role of a second facade layer, that control of as much light during the day as is necessary for conducting the classes inside. They can be completely closed or open.
The public area is fully glazed, the two main entrances for visitors are highlighted with wood paneling, and non-glazed areas are also covered with this paneling. The roof is landscaped and secured with a glass railing, and is accessible from the second floor of the building.
The volume of the concert hall is solved with white panels, on which is mounted a metal static structure with wooden slats. They are made in pyramidal shapes of different sizes are formed, which gives a more artistic vision to the building.
• CONCEPTUAL SOLUTION
Conceptually, the building can be considered in two aspects - psychological and architectural. From a psychological point of view - as a reflection of human perceptions in various areas of activities carried out in the building, and from an architectural - as a combination of contrasting elements that provide privacy and social contacts and connections of different groups of people in its territory.
Several basic principles are considered:
• OPEN SPACE:
• ASSOCIATION: FULLY GLASSED CENTRAL LOBBY:
A person is open to communicate and exchange information with other people, to share similar interests and events - for exampe - visiting a theater, exhibition, musical performance, dance performance, play and others. Here he is free to communicate, make new contacts and learn new things from other people.
• CLOSED SPACE:
• ASSOCIATION: THE CLOSED VOLUME OF THE CONCERT HALL
Man finds himself in another world - the world of art, in which he immerses himself while enjoying it. Despite the hall full of people, he is devoted only to the performance, which takes him into his feelings, thoughts and perceptions of what he heard, what he saw. These emotions are caused by the power of art - in every form.
• OPEN AND CLOSED SPACE:
• ASSOCIATION: THE POSSIBILITY OF CLOSED OR OPEN VOLUME OF THE LEARNING AREA
Man meets a group of people who share and engage in activities that are directly related to common interests in a given art - dance, theater, music, art. And when a person performs a certain kind of art, he falls back into his inner world, which leads him to the passion to express himself through song, dance, actor. And here he shares these emotions with his partner - in a musical duet, in a dance couple or in a theater group, in an orchestra and others.
• INTERIOR SOLUTION
The interior of the building is consistent with the exterior - wood is again a leading element and material, which is successfully complemented by the presence of greenery and natural plants in different areas. Hanging lamps are placed on the accent places. The main areas - reception, recreation, cafe - library and exhibition, are located so as to be close to external visitors and to the students. The idea of more public areas leads to the gathering of more people and the exchange of information, as well as free access to these areas of the building for everyone.
The concert hall has also been designed. Wood is used again in the decorative ceiling with slats, forming a suitable shape for good acoustics in the hall. The walls also have acoustic dark-colored panels that have a pyramidal shape - another connection of the interior with the exterior - they follow the shape of the shell of the volume of the concert hall. The hall is designed to be suitable for musical performances, as well as for dance and theater.
• CONCLUSION
In conclusion, I can say that the building is designed to become a home for art in every form of it, to encourage free creativity, and to be a place, where people desire to learn new things every day.
I woкld like to quote William Shakespeare, who said these inspiring words:
" THE OBJECT OF ART, IS TO GIVE LIFE A SHAPE."
