adidas Flagship Store in Lagos: A Bold Fusion of Nigerian Culture and Global Design by Oshinowo Studio
The adidas Flagship Store Lagos by Oshinowo Studio blends Nigerian culture, sustainability, and modern design, creating a dynamic retail and cultural hub.
A New Landmark in West African Retail
The adidas Flagship Store in Lagos, designed by the acclaimed Oshinowo Studio, marks a significant milestone as the brand’s first flagship store in West Africa. Situated in the vibrant Victoria Island district, the store reflects a seamless blend of Nigerian architectural heritage, sustainability, and modern retail aesthetics. Oshinowo Studio, formerly known as cmDesign Atelier, won the project through a competitive design process led by ONL Estates, which sought to integrate local culture with adidas’s global brand identity.

Architectural Inspiration: The Spirit of Lagos in Design
Lagos, a city renowned for its dynamic urban culture and creative energy, served as the primary inspiration for the 380-square-meter retail space. The store, a retrofit of a 1970s building, transforms an existing structure into a contemporary architectural statement. The design concept is rooted in sustainability, reuse, and regeneration, key themes that define the evolving urban landscape of Nigeria’s largest city.
The building’s façade is a standout feature, crafted from a combination of solid and perforated corrugated aluminum sheets—a material commonly used in Lagos’s mass housing developments. This innovative design choice not only pays homage to the city’s architectural vernacular but also introduces a modern and interactive visual effect. Integrated LED linear lighting enhances the façade’s ridged surface, creating a dynamic interplay of light and shadow, where transparency shifts depending on the viewer’s distance from the structure.

Sustainable and Functional Innovations
Beyond aesthetics, Oshinowo Studio prioritized eco-conscious design strategies to ensure the building’s long-term sustainability. The store incorporates:
- A solar power system to enhance energy efficiency
- A sewage treatment plant with wastewater reuse for irrigation
- An advanced air conditioning system for optimal climate control
- A steel-frame and glass extension, adding a modern touch to the structure
Additionally, the project preserves existing 25-year-old Roystonea regia trees, reinforcing the firm’s commitment to environmental conservation in urban developments.

A Hub for Sports, Culture, and Art
The adidas flagship store extends beyond traditional retail by offering interactive spaces, including a basketball half-court and an event stage. These additions foster community engagement and provide a platform for local talent, aligning with Lagos’s reputation as a global hub for sports and culture.
In collaboration with renowned Nigerian contemporary artists, the store features work by Chinelo Ezewudo, Osa Okunkpolor, Dennis Osadebe, and Ayoola Gbolahan, bringing an authentic cultural narrative to the shopping experience. This artistic integration further elevates the space as not just a store but a landmark destination that celebrates Nigeria’s creative and athletic spirit.

A Statement from Tosin Oshinowo
Reflecting on the project’s significance, Tosin Oshinowo, founder of Oshinowo Studio, shared:
“We have relished the opportunity to create a scheme that combines our love of Lagos and Nigerian contemporary culture with our global perspective and approach. Our design is inspired by the city’s resilient, adaptable, and go-getter resolve, building a place of convergence for sports and culture.”
The adidas Flagship Store Lagos is a testament to the power of architectural storytelling, where sustainability, local identity, and global retail design converge. Through its innovative approach, Oshinowo Studio has set a new benchmark for modern retail spaces in Africa, reinforcing Lagos’s position as a creative and commercial powerhouse.
