Nestled on the edge of the Ecological Station of the Brasília Botanical Garden, Adriana House by Fittipaldi Arquitetura is a striking example of contemporary Brazilian residential design rooted in sustainability, bioclimatic strategies, and deep respect for the Cerrado ecosystem. Completed in 2022, the project embraces its natural surroundings through an architecture that dissolves boundaries, blurs indoor–outdoor thresholds, and celebrates regional materials.

Architecture Integrated with Nature

The home unfolds beneath a sweeping, unifying roof that structures and shelters all living spaces. This generous canopy creates extensive shaded areas, offering thermal comfort while forging a seamless connection with the landscape. Beneath it, a thoughtful composition of volumes and voids establishes the rhythm of the architecture, allowing natural light, vegetation, and breezes to flow through.

The design reflects the essence of the Cerrado horizon—expansive, open, and fluid. Instead of dominating the terrain, the architecture sits lightly, merging visually with the sky and surrounding vegetation. This continuous dialogue with nature ensures that outdoor life permeates the everyday experience of the residents.

Sustainable Design & Nature-Based Solutions

Sustainability is embedded at every level of the project. Fittipaldi Arquitetura draws from local references and prioritizes durable, low-maintenance materials suited to Brasília’s climate. The expansive roof and building systems are optimized for solar energy generation, reducing environmental impact and long-term energy demands.

Water management follows Nature-Based Solutions (NBS):

  • Rainwater is directed efficiently for drainage and aquifer recharge.
  • Wastewater treatment uses natural systems, allowing water reuse and supporting biodiversity.
  • The overall strategy strengthens local ecological resilience while supporting the preservation of the botanical garden’s sensitive environment.

Materiality: Timber and Brick in Harmonious Balance

A refined structural composition defines the identity of Adriana House. The architects combine glued laminated timber (glulam) with solid brick, creating a warm, tactile, and structurally expressive architecture.

  • The brick elements stabilize the construction and provide thermal inertia.
  • Glulam beams stretch into space with slender proportions, enabling bold overhangs and cantilevered forms that lighten the volume.

One of the most remarkable features is the rear cantilevered veranda, which demonstrates the engineering finesse of Helio Olga. This floating deck-like space seems to defy gravity, showcasing the structural potential of engineered wood and offering residents a panoramic, elevated experience of the surrounding Cerrado landscape.
