A.K Home by PAU Architects – Compact Urban Living in Ho Chi Minh City
A.K Home by PAU Architects is a compact, sustainable townhouse in Ho Chi Minh City, optimizing light, ventilation, greenery, and multifunctional spaces.
A.K Home, designed by PAU Architects, is a thoughtfully conceived compact townhouse situated in a tranquil residential area of Ho Chi Minh City. Nestled within a 70 m² plot with an angled, irregular layout, the design challenge focused on maximizing natural light, ventilation, and spatial efficiency while maintaining privacy and creating a serene urban retreat.

Urban Context & Design Concept The homeowners sought a modest yet characterful home that harmonizes with the neighborhood rhythm. PAU Architects responded with a staggered façade of diagonal planes, which gently retreats from the street to form a buffer zone. This design not only enhances privacy but also allows daylight to penetrate deep into the interiors, bringing warmth and life into the compact space.

Spatial Organization & Interior Design The house employs a split-level configuration to create fluid spatial connections and promote natural ventilation. The ground floor accommodates the kitchen, dining area, and parking, opening into a green buffer that channels light and airflow throughout the living areas. The mezzanine houses the living room, a multipurpose space for work, relaxation, and gatherings, connected by a graceful curved staircase that introduces movement and softness.

The first floor features two bedrooms, each with private bathrooms and ample daylight access. The master bedroom utilizes the stepped-back façade to draw sunlight deep into the space, while skylights illuminate the bathroom, balancing privacy with natural ventilation. The rooftop terrace serves as a semi-outdoor retreat, incorporating lush planting zones and a bathing area, reflecting the homeowners’ love for greenery.

Climate Strategies & Sustainability A.K Home integrates passive climate strategies tailored to its tropical environment. The split-level layout encourages vertical and horizontal airflow, while the rear setback functions as a lightwell, improving cross-ventilation. Strategically placed openings optimize daylight and privacy. Green pockets interwoven across multiple levels regulate humidity and temperature, creating a comfortable indoor climate without heavy reliance on mechanical cooling.

Façade & Building Envelope The front façade features layered steel mesh, providing privacy while balancing the plot’s asymmetry. The mesh softens solar exposure and protects the front yard, creating ideal conditions for the homeowners’ plants. This approach merges aesthetic appeal with practical functionality, ensuring a harmonious relationship between the building, the neighborhood, and nature.

A.K Home exemplifies a sophisticated response to small-scale urban living. Through multi-level planning, careful use of greenery, and attention to natural light and ventilation, PAU Architects created a warm, intimate, and functional home that enhances both lifestyle and spatial efficiency. This project demonstrates how thoughtful design can transform even limited urban plots into inspiring and sustainable living spaces.
