Among the Birches
Kindergarten with particular attention to the needs of neurodivergent individuals on Bohaterów Westerplatte street in Poznań
“Among the Birches” is a conceptual kindergarten designed for neurodivergent children and
those with special educational needs. Located on Bohaterów Westerplatte Street in Poznań,
the project responds to a unique natural setting defined by a cluster of birch trees that
connect the site with the nearby Świerczewski Forest. Instead of imposing a dominant
architectural form, the design allows the building to adapt to the surrounding landscape.
The architecture takes inspiration from the rhythm and lightness of the birch grove,
influencing both the form and material expression of the building. The northern façade of the
ground floor is recessed to create a welcoming entrance and a double-height central hall
illuminated by a roof skylight. On the southern side, the building gently curves to preserve an
existing tree, while the upper floor develops a soft, organic shape that opens onto a terrace
overlooking the surrounding greenery.
The roof is designed as an additional play environment with swings and climbing structures,
providing children with safe outdoor experiences at different levels of the building. Interior
spaces are carefully organised to support sensory comfort and diverse learning needs. Each
classroom includes areas for learning, creative activities and a quiet zone that allows
children to withdraw when overstimulated.
The project also emphasises accessibility and sustainability through barrier-free design,
renewable energy systems and rainwater management. By integrating architecture with
nature and prioritising inclusive spatial solutions, the project proposes an educational
environment that supports the wellbeing, development and independence of young users.
