Anukrom House, designed by Venna Architects, is a remarkable architectural masterpiece that harmonizes nostalgia, cultural heritage, and modern living. Located in Alamdar Para, Bangladesh, this 496 m² residence was completed in 2021 and reflects the emotions of its owner through thoughtful design and space utilization. The project embodies a deep connection between architecture and human sentiment, drawing inspiration from the poetic verses of Emily Dickinson.

Architectural Concept: Translating Emotion into Space

The genesis of Anukrom House was rooted in nostalgia and a desire to create a solitude of space that allows for reflection and personal connection. The design captures a profound sense of belonging and continuity, offering a sanctuary where past and present merge seamlessly.

Spatial Organization and Form Generation

The house follows a rectangular form, strategically designed to maximize natural ventilation and minimize heat gain. This layout integrates two courtyards, fostering a sense of community while ensuring privacy for the inhabitants. The front courtyard serves as the main entrance, featuring a kachari ghar (guest house) dedicated to Ibrahim Chowdhury. The private courtyard is used for intimate family gatherings, creating a meaningful space for social interaction.

A well-placed staircase leads to the upper level, where an open kitchen and a connecting bridge seamlessly link the living and dining areas. Apertures in the roof ensure ample natural light and ventilation, enhancing indoor comfort. The terrace acts as an extension of the living space, promoting engagement between the residents and the surrounding environment.

Materiality and Construction

The choice of materials plays a pivotal role in defining the architectural identity of Anukrom House. The project features materials sourced from renowned manufacturers, including:

  • Holcim (cement and concrete solutions)
  • BSRM (structural steel reinforcement)
  • Nasir Glass (high-quality glasswork)
  • Star Particle Board Mills Limited (wood paneling and finishes)

The use of brick, wood, and concrete establishes a tactile connection to traditional Bangladeshi architecture while ensuring durability and sustainability. The carefully selected shading elements and cross-ventilation strategies contribute to energy efficiency, reducing dependence on artificial cooling.

Integration of Nature and Spirituality

One of the most profound aspects of Anukrom House is its integration of spiritual elements. The southern green compound, envisioned as a 'solitude of space,' establishes an eternal bond between family members and their ancestors. The prayer space, positioned strategically within the house, faces the private courtyard, where the mother's grave remains visually connected. This intentional design feature allows family members to engage in prayer while maintaining a physical and spiritual link to their heritage.
