ART Residence by Jacobsen Arquitetura: Tranquil Modernism Embraced by Nature in Paraty, Brazil

Nestled in the coastal town of Paraty, Rio de Janeiro, the ART Residence by Jacobsen Arquitetura expresses refined modernism in perfect harmony with tropical nature. Completed in 2024 and spanning 1,878 square meters, this beachfront residence balances contemporary geometry with organic surroundings, creating a spatial rhythm of transparency, serenity, and understated luxury.

Hidden among mature native trees, the residence is an architectural statement that seeks to disappear rather than dominate. Its orthogonal lines and minimalist materials blend with the untamed textures of the Atlantic landscape, making it a study in integration between architecture and environment.

A Discreet Entrance and Sculptural Welcome

The approach to the ART Residence is intentionally subtle. From the street, its stone-clad façade conceals the interior world within. A porte-cochère formed by the elegant cantilever of the upper volume extends a sense of invitation while maintaining privacy. The robust stone slabs of the exterior generate rhythm and solidity, grounding the structure within the verdant site.

Upon entering, visitors encounter a sweeping entrance hall where a sculptural travertine and wood staircase becomes the centerpiece. The staircase is not only functional but symbolic—a crafted core from which the three primary axes of the house unfold, organizing circulation and visual continuity throughout the home.

Social Living and Connection to the Landscape

To the right of the entry lies the social core: a series of interconnected living, dining, and gourmet spaces that dissolve into the outdoors through extensive floor-to-ceiling glass panels. The architecture embraces transparency and openness, drawing the lush coastal vegetation and sea breezes directly into the interior.

Expansive verandas frame the landscape, while a fluid transition from indoor to outdoor living blurs the boundaries between architecture and nature. This dialogue with the environment is enhanced by natural textures—granite floors, wood ceilings, and handcrafted furnishings that evoke the tones and tactility of Paraty’s coastline.

To the left, a more private wing houses the family room, gym, and sauna, all opening onto a swimming pool and a lawn that gently descends toward the ocean. At the clients’ request, an alfresco dining pavilion was integrated into the garden, providing a seamless space for outdoor family life against the backdrop of sea and mountains.

Elevated Serenity: Suites Framing the Horizon

The upper level is dedicated to the sleeping quarters, structured along three linear axes. The master suite, children’s rooms, and guest suites each occupy distinct volumes for privacy while maintaining a collective connection through shared sightlines to the ocean. A continuous balcony runs along the family suites, offering panoramic views of the lawn, sea, and surrounding mountain ranges.

The guest wing elegantly becomes part of the lower structure’s cantilever, supported by a metal lattice framework that ensures balance and lightness. Every room, regardless of function, participates in the experience of the landscape, echoing Jacobsen Arquitetura’s signature approach—where architecture serves as a vessel for light, air, and perspective.

Material Palette and Interior Harmony

The design language of the ART Residence reflects refinement through restraint. A light wood-tone ceiling softens the sophisticated volumes, creating a warm contrast with the house’s darker façade tones. Extended double eaves protect the interiors from sun and rain, contributing to the home’s environmental comfort and sustainability.

Inside, every detail speaks to a curatorial approach. Custom furniture, art pieces, and designer elements were chosen in collaboration between the clients and the oMice design studio. The interiors celebrate modern Brazilian craftsmanship, expressing material authenticity and subtle elegance.

The surrounding landscape was meticulously planned to preserve existing trees, ensuring that architecture coexists respectfully with its natural setting. The resulting composition feels organic and timeless—an escape that combines cultivated design with the raw poetry of coastal Brazil.

Architecture That Embraces Its Setting

The ART Residence exemplifies Jacobsen Arquitetura’s philosophy of designing homes that engrain themselves within the landscape rather than stand apart from it. Its deceptive simplicity, immersive spatial flow, and thoughtful proportions embody the quiet sophistication that defines much of Brazil’s contemporary architecture.

In Paraty, where the rainforest meets the sea, the residence stands as a celebration of modern tropical living, merging functionality, art, and environment into an architectural experience that is simultaneously bold and serene.
