Ascension Paysagère: MVRDV's Innovative Residential Complex in Rennes, France
Ascension Paysagère by MVRDV is a sustainable, nature-inspired residential complex in Rennes, blending urban design with green living.
Ascension Paysagère, designed by the renowned architecture firm MVRDV in collaboration with co-architects ALL, stands as a testament to innovative urban design in Rennes, France. Completed in 2022, this 12-story, 10,550-square-meter complex addresses the city's need for increased housing density while harmoniously integrating with its natural surroundings.
Architectural Design Inspired by Nature
The design of Ascension Paysagère draws inspiration from geological formations, featuring two curving buildings with gradually receding slopes. This terraced structure not only provides aesthetic appeal but also creates expansive outdoor spaces for residents. The façade is adorned with matte and glossy ceramic panels in varying grey tones, enhancing its stratified appearance and allowing the building to blend seamlessly with the riverside environment.

Sustainable Living and Community Integration
Emphasizing sustainability, the complex incorporates greenery throughout its terraces, equipped with automatic irrigation systems and dedicated water taps for easy maintenance. This design extends the lush riverbank atmosphere vertically, promoting biodiversity and offering residents a serene living environment. At ground level, the buildings define public spaces, including a green pedestrian street and a plaza by the water's edge, fostering community interaction and engagement.

Diverse Housing Options
Ascension Paysagère provides 138 homes in various sizes and price ranges, including 37 units of social housing. Each apartment features outdoor spaces such as terraces, balconies, or loggias, enhancing the quality of life for residents. The complex also includes commercial spaces and amenities like Le Bacchus, a restaurant and theatre, enriching the cultural vibrancy of the area.

Urban Densification with Environmental Sensitivity
Located at the confluence of the Ille and Vilaine rivers, Ascension Paysagère occupies a transitional space between Rennes' city center and its outskirts. This strategic positioning allows the complex to provide much-needed housing density without encroaching on the surrounding countryside. The design's gradual step-backs and integration with the natural landscape exemplify a thoughtful approach to urban expansion.
Ascension Paysagère by MVRDV exemplifies a harmonious blend of innovative architectural design, sustainable living, and community-focused development. By drawing inspiration from natural formations and integrating green spaces throughout, the complex offers a unique and enriching living experience in the heart of Rennes.
