In the heart of the Rocky Mountains, nestled within the iconic snowy slopes of Aspen, Colorado, the Aspen Residence by KAA Design Group emerges as a stunning modern transformation. Once an unassuming 1980s duplex, this 6,004-square-foot mountain home has been meticulously reimagined into a luxurious alpine retreat that harmoniously blends contemporary architecture, natural materials, and sweeping mountain vistas.

A Strategic Renovation Rooted in Restraint

Situated at the base of Aspen’s renowned ski slopes, the residence faced strict design codes that demanded thoughtful and creative interventions. Rather than rebuilding from scratch, KAA Design Group took a refined approach—choosing to preserve the original structure’s side-by-side gable roof forms while completely reinterpreting the home’s spatial and material identity.

This strategic decision allowed the design team to open the interior dramatically. By removing internal dividing walls, the upper floor was transformed into an expansive open-plan living space, defined by a sculptural, mountain-inspired ceiling form. Wall-to-wall, full-height glazing along the gable ends frames panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and ski runs, immersing the interior in natural light and alpine serenity.

Blending Modern Design with Colorado Regionalism

The Aspen Residence draws from regional traditions while embracing modernist principles. The exterior features light cedar siding, paying homage to Colorado’s vernacular architecture. In contrast, dark panelized plaster, concrete textures, and sleek metal details give the home a distinctly contemporary edge.

Inside, a neutral palette establishes a sense of calm and sophistication. Subtle formal gestures and layered materials—such as board-formed concrete, timber ceilings, and clean-lined finishes—create a cohesive transition between interior and exterior spaces. Pops of color, strategically introduced throughout the interiors, lend playful contrast to the otherwise serene atmosphere.

A Home that Celebrates Movement and Form

Upon arrival, the architectural choreography begins. The cedar cladding peels away at the entrance to reveal a covered front porch. Behind a louvered glass façade, a brightly colored metal ribbon staircase winds vertically, becoming an expressive sculptural centerpiece.

Visitors are greeted by a dramatic three-story atrium, anchored by raw concrete walls that rise through the heart of the house. The dynamic staircase appears to dance alongside these surfaces, drawing the eye upward and inviting exploration. Ascending to the upper level reveals one of the home’s most breathtaking features—unobstructed views of the Aspen ski slopes, now fully embraced thanks to the bold glazing strategy.

A Harmonious Dialogue Between Nature and Architecture

Throughout the Aspen Residence, KAA Design Group emphasizes a seamless connection to the surrounding landscape. Carefully placed openings, thoughtful material transitions, and an elegant composition of forms contribute to an architecture that is both grounded and elevated.

The result is a modern mountain home that celebrates its rugged context while offering warmth, comfort, and elevated design. The Aspen Residence stands as a testament to the power of restorative renovation, architectural restraint, and the enduring beauty of natural materials.
