“Athlete’s Village Îlot Quinconces Plot 5: Flexible Residential Design by Brenac & Gonzalez & Associés in Saint-Ouen-sur
The Athlete’s Village Plot 5 by Brenac & Gonzalez blends flexible housing, terracotta façades, sustainable design, and metropolitan domesticity in Saint-Ouen-sur-Seine.
Located in Saint-Ouen-sur-Seine, France, the Athlete’s Village, Îlot Quinconces Plot 5, designed by Brenac & Gonzalez & Associés, is a striking example of modern residential and sports architecture. Completed in 2024 over an area of 1890 m², this project demonstrates innovative approaches to housing design, urban integration, and adaptive use for temporary athletic accommodations.

Innovative Residential Typologies and Metropolitan Domesticity
Brenac & Gonzalez & Associés applied their extensive expertise in housing construction and new building techniques to develop flexible residential units that merge comfort, efficiency, and adaptability. Focusing on metropolitan domesticity, the architects explored the relationship between apartment layouts, communal spaces, and everyday life. Units were conceived to allow quick and cost-effective conversion from athlete accommodations to permanent housing, aligning with long-term urban strategies in Greater Paris.

Contextual Urban Design and Heritage Dialogue
Plot 5 maintains a sensitive alignment with the Quinconces grid, running alongside the central forest that spans the site’s length. The architectural approach is deliberately sober and unpretentious, emphasizing a narrative-driven design rather than ostentation. This design philosophy ensures the building engages viewers on multiple levels, offering diverse interpretations depending on perspective and context. The project also maintains a dialogue with the Cité du Cinéma, integrating ornamentation and subtle architectural detailing in balustrades, windows, and blinds.

Materiality and Façade Articulation
The façade design of Plot 5 is a masterful interplay of glazed and matte terracotta tiles, forming motifs that echo tartan weaves, historic brick ornamentation like that at the Meunier chocolate factory, and traditional Jules Ferry school façades. The dark ochre hue establishes the building as a warm, structured landmark, offering gradated textures and rich typologies that respond dynamically to sunlight and daily activity. These details create an elegant nod to Mediterranean architecture while reinforcing the building’s identity within the urban fabric.

Strategic Urban Planning and Long-Term Vision
Brenac & Gonzalez & Associés concentrated their intervention on three pivotal plots, 1, 5, and 8, ensuring each unit contributes to a cohesive urban narrative. By prioritizing sustainability, heritage sensitivity, and adaptability, the Athlete’s Village serves as a model for future urban housing strategies, blending temporary event use with permanent community benefits.

Architectural Photography and Recognition
The project has been documented by renowned photographers Stefan Tuchila, Sergio Grazia, and SOLIDEO: Dronepress, highlighting the building’s façade textures, window articulation, and urban context. Its understated elegance, thoughtful materiality, and flexible design approach make Plot 5 a noteworthy residential and sports architecture landmark in France.
