Auyl Restaurant by NAAW + DUNIE: A Sensory Dining Experience in Almaty
Auyl Restaurant blends Central Asian tradition with modern design, featuring an open kitchen, immersive ambiance, and architectural storytelling in Almaty.
A Fusion of Architecture, Gastronomy, and Performance
Located in the scenic Medeu mountain district of Almaty, Kazakhstan, Auyl Restaurant is a groundbreaking dining concept where architecture, culture, and cuisine converge. Designed by NAAW in collaboration with DUNIE, this 350 m² space is more than just a restaurant—it's an immersive experience that engages all the senses.
From the moment guests step inside, they are enveloped in an atmosphere that blends traditional Central Asian design with contemporary aesthetics. The space is meticulously curated with rich textures, warm lighting, and dynamic elements that mirror the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape.

A Stage for Culinary Artistry
At the heart of Auyl's design is an open-kitchen concept, where guests can witness the artistry of chefs preparing signature dishes inspired by nomadic traditions. Whether seated at the Topchan lounge, perched on a stool at the bar, or gathered around a traditional table, visitors have an unobstructed view of the entire cooking process.
A defining feature of the interior is the dome-like structures above the kitchen, reminiscent of the yurt, a symbol of Kazakh nomadic heritage. These elements not only create a striking architectural statement but also serve as a visual boundary between the cooking and dining areas.

An Atmosphere of Sensory Engagement
Auyl Restaurant is designed to evoke emotion. The play of subdued lighting, natural textures, and ambient sounds transforms dining into a theatrical performance. The gentle hum of conversation blends with the rhythmic kneading of dough, the crackling of fire, and the distant sounds of wind and rustling leaves, immersing guests in an authentic steppe experience.
Elvira Bakubayeva and Aisulu Uali, co-founders of NAAW, emphasize that the goal was to create more than just a space—it was to craft a narrative, a feeling, and an experience. Designer Assel Nusipkozhanova (DUNIE) contributed to shaping the ambiance, ensuring that every detail, from handcrafted elements to material selection, resonates with sincerity and cultural authenticity.

A Tribute to Central Asian Heritage
Beyond its innovative design, Auyl Restaurant pays homage to Kazakh traditions through its cuisine and interior concept. The use of natural wood, brick, and artisanal craftsmanship reflects the authenticity of Central Asian architecture, while the live cooking stations offer a contemporary twist on age-old culinary customs.
By seamlessly blending gastronomy, design, and performance, Auyl Restaurant stands as a testament to the power of collaborative creativity, inviting guests to step into a space where tradition meets innovation.
