A Transitional Campus for a Growing City

Hyderabad’s rapid westward expansion, fueled by large-scale residential and office developments, has created a dynamic yet fast-changing urban landscape. With infrastructure struggling to keep pace, there is a critical need for new educational facilities. To address this demand, experienced builders commissioned a transitional campus—Avinya Inaugural Campus—designed to host the first cohort of students aged 3 to 8. Once the permanent school campus is completed, this inaugural campus will be repurposed into a flagship office, showcasing the builder’s ongoing projects in the region.

Designing for Young Learners

Research consistently shows that a child’s well-being is deeply influenced by their surroundings—home, neighborhood, and especially school. Children spend nearly half of their waking hours at school, making the physical environment a key factor in holistic development.

To support young learners, the campus is a single-story structure, ensuring the scale is approachable and non-intimidating. Every detail, from spatial layout to materials, is designed to foster a sense of belonging. Students feel that the school belongs to them as much as they belong to it, while educators gain spaces that support dynamic learning experiences.

Site and Architectural Features

The campus sits on a 1.9-acre linear site stretching south to north, bordered by a main road to the south and a by-lane to the west. The northern half is devoted to playgrounds and outdoor activities, while the southern half houses the school.

The building is organized along a central concrete spine, the only rigid structural element, punctuated with circular skylights and opening to green courtyards at regular intervals. Classrooms are arranged on either side of this spine, forming east and west wings. The rooms feature a metal frame and sandwich-panel roofing, slightly elevated to allow hot air to escape, maintaining cool interior temperatures. Buffer spaces such as kitchens, storage areas, and restrooms are strategically located on the west to mitigate the intense afternoon sun.

A Campus Rooted in Nature and Sustainability

A defining principle of Avinya’s design is that every classroom opens onto a green courtyard, serving as an outdoor extension of the learning space. Curvilinear earthen walls, made from repurposed debris bricks from the builder’s other projects, create safe, enclosed areas for children to explore, play, and plant vegetables. The earthy tones of the walls complement the natural surroundings, promoting environmental awareness from a young age.

The central spine doubles as a vibrant hub, with seating nooks and breakout areas encouraging spontaneous interaction among students and teachers. Here, the built environment becomes an active participant in learning—a “third teacher” that inspires creativity, collaboration, and curiosity.
