Axial House by TAU Arquitetos: A Harmonious Integration of Concrete, Landscape, and Light in Bragança Paulista

Embracing Topography and Site Orientation

Set within a residential condominium in the countryside of São Paulo, the Axial House by TAU Arquitetos thoughtfully engages with its corner lot and irregular terrain. The design’s orientation and volume are informed by the topographic nuances, leading to a three-story architectural composition that emphasizes spatial transparency, indoor-outdoor continuity, and natural light integration.

Spatial Strategy and Central Courtyard Concept

The architectural layout is anchored around an internal open-air courtyard, which greets visitors upon entry. This garden courtyard not only acts as a visual and climatic connector but also channels daylight deep into the home. Surrounding the courtyard are the primary social spaces—the living room, dining area, and kitchen—all visually connected to the outdoor heart of the residence.

A sculptural staircase, strategically located beyond the courtyard, separates the circulation and guides residents to the intimate upper floor or the semi-public first-floor areas. The ground level also subtly adapts to the existing slope, creating varied sectional views and enhancing spatial dynamics.

Functional Zoning and Privacy Layers

While the central zones remain open and interactive, the service areas—including the laundry room, garage, and storage—are neatly positioned along the side façade, ensuring privacy and functionality. Meanwhile, the rear exterior is transformed into a retreat-like outdoor leisure space, complete with a gourmet terrace, swimming pool, and vegetated borders that shield the area from street view.

The lower floor discreetly accommodates technical infrastructure and a service bathroom, directly accessible from the pool area—enhancing the usability of the outdoor program.

Materiality: Exposed Concrete, Cumaru Wood, and Portuguese Stone

Material expression plays a central role in defining the Axial House’s architectural character. Exposed concrete is both structural and aesthetic, appearing prominently in the first-floor columns and upper-level slabs and beams. This is complemented by the warm textures of Cumaru wood and the earthy tones of red Portuguese stone, establishing a rich yet grounded material palette that dialogues with the landscape.

A corten-toned metallic brise soleil lines the upper floor, providing sun control and a subtle urban identity to the façade while framing openings that enable cross-ventilation—reducing reliance on mechanical cooling systems.

Climate Responsiveness and Upper-Level Program

The top floor accommodates the private program: an intimate family lounge, guest room, suite, and bathroom. Its layout is tailored for climatic comfort, with cross-ventilation strategies and sun protection elements seamlessly integrated into the architectural envelope. The overall massing and detailing ensure that natural ventilation, shading, and passive cooling are embedded into the home’s performance.
