A Summer Retreat Harmonizing Architecture and Landscape

Set on a steeply sloping site surrounded by a preserved forest, Balance House by Alexandre Chaguri Arquitetura redefines the relationship between structure, topography, and light. Designed as a summer residence for a couple and their daughter, the project is a refined composition of architectural precision, natural integration, and spatial fluidity.

By embracing the terrain’s slope, the architects inverted the traditional residential layout: the six suite bedrooms occupy the upper level, oriented toward panoramic forest views, while the social areas unfold on the lower floor, seamlessly merging with the garden and swimming pool. This design approach not only maximizes the natural gradient but also enhances privacy and thermal comfort throughout the house.

The Art of Balance: A Structural and Aesthetic Statement

The residence derives its name from its most iconic architectural gesture — a 10-meter cantilevered upper volume that projects boldly over the glazed ground floor. This suspended structure creates a striking visual balance and provides shade for the social spaces below, embodying the project’s concept of lightness and equilibrium.

A vertical brise-soleil of clean, geometric lines adds both aesthetic refinement and functional shading, filtering sunlight while emphasizing the house’s minimalist identity. This precise architectural detailing ensures that the interplay of light, shadow, and structure remains at the core of the design narrative.

A Sensory Arrival Experience

Visitors enter the house through a serene reflecting pool that mirrors the sky and architecture, immediately establishing a tranquil ambiance. The water feature enhances the microclimate and introduces a cooling element that contrasts beautifully with the surrounding forest.

From this point, a floating staircase leads gracefully toward the social areas, revealing a spatial sequence that integrates architecture and landscape in one fluid movement.

Open-Plan Living: Transparency and Connection

The living and dining spaces, together with the gourmet kitchen, open fully toward the pool terrace through floor-to-ceiling glass panels, ensuring uninterrupted views and natural cross-ventilation. These generous openings blur the boundaries between inside and outside, inviting the lush surroundings into the daily life of the residents.

Inside, contemporary furnishings are paired with organic design elements, creating a dialogue between sophistication and natural warmth. A neutral palette highlights textures of wood, concrete, and glass, allowing the abundant natural light to become a defining feature of the interior atmosphere.

Outdoor Living and Reflective Spaces

The swimming pool, positioned as an extension of the living area, acts as a mirror to the rear façade, visually connecting architecture and water. Around it, leisure spaces—including a sauna, home office, and restroom—complete the program, encouraging relaxation and well-being.
