Birdhouse by North Arrow Studio – Innovative ADU Design in East Austin
Birdhouse by North Arrow Studio is a 900 ft² ADU in East Austin, integrating trees, vaulted ceilings, round windows, and minimalist design.
The Birdhouse by North Arrow Studio is a striking accessory dwelling unit (ADU) designed to harmonize with East Austin’s evolving Chestnut neighborhood. Nestled on a narrow 5,900-square-foot lot alongside a 1939 single-story bungalow, the project thoughtfully works around three large, protected pecan trees, integrating nature into the home’s layout and providing natural shade, privacy, and a unique character.

This compact yet intelligently designed 900-square-foot home demonstrates how clever spatial planning can make a small footprint feel expansive. The L-shaped plan forms a courtyard oriented toward one of the mature pecan trees, creating a private outdoor retreat. The ground floor features a bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, dining area, and living space, all designed to maximize openness and flow. Upstairs, the main suite benefits from vaulted ceilings of the double-gabled form, strategically pushing walls outward to enhance volume and light.

The Birdhouse emphasizes simplicity and playfulness through its minimal material palette and thoughtful design gestures. The double gable structure is clad in light corrugated metal, creating a seamless transition between walls and roof while complementing the existing bungalow. Iconic 5-foot diameter round windows punctuate each gable, evoking the charm of a traditional birdhouse while leveraging tree canopies for privacy. These circular motifs continue throughout the interior with custom steel circle windows, curved walls, and a glowing polycarbonate courtyard wall that filters light into hallways.

Every design decision prioritizes efficiency and functionality, proving that constraints can inspire creativity. By keeping materials minimal and focusing on site integration, North Arrow Studio delivers an ADU that is simple, elegant, and contextually responsive. The Birdhouse is a model for modern small-scale residential architecture, combining sustainable design, clever space optimization, and thoughtful engagement with its natural surroundings.
