In the heart of Bratislava, the BK II Office, designed by Kuklica Smerek Architekti, exemplifies the seamless integration of contemporary office design within a historical industrial context. The concept centers around creating an "office-machine," a highly functional workspace nestled within a repurposed factory building. This innovative design separates the office into two distinct but interwoven units, each with its own unique character and function.

Office Layout: Functional Zones and Fluid Connectivity

Upon entering the office, visitors are greeted by a dynamic space that merges work, relaxation, and social interaction. The entrance area, meeting room, and a communal dining table are carefully positioned within the front zone. The transition between these spaces and the more focused office areas is marked by a relaxing mezzanine, which serves as both a physical and conceptual bridge. Below the mezzanine, a multifunctional box provides a kitchen on the exterior and a technical area on the interior, highlighting the adaptability of the design.

The mezzanine, as the heart of the office layout, blends work and relaxation in a compact yet efficient footprint. It offers a raised living area with comfortable seating and panoramic views of the office below. Accessed via a metal spiral staircase, this space fosters a sense of connection and openness, encouraging interaction among employees.

Office Configuration: Embracing Open and Private Spaces

Behind the mezzanine, the workspace extends into a more rigid office layout. Rows of desks are strategically placed by large windows, allowing natural light to flood the space. A compact block of five office cells, each with a ceiling height of nearly 3 meters, sits against the opposite wall. The contrast between the open-plan layout and these private office cells creates a dynamic work environment. The integration of greenery throughout the office softens the rigid geometry, providing visual relief and enhancing the overall atmosphere.

Material Palette: Industrial Aesthetic Meets Modern Functionality

The material palette of the BK II Office is a thoughtful blend of industrial and contemporary design elements. Reflecting the building’s history as part of the 1900 Pradi-areň factory, the flooring is made from oak parquet, reminiscent of the original surfaces once used by weaving machines. The structural elements—metal surfaces and glazed partitions—are intentionally exposed, aligning with the office-machine concept, which celebrates the technical infrastructure as part of the design narrative.

A Design that Merges Function, Aesthetics, and Interaction

In the BK II Office, the design does not attempt to hide its technical infrastructure behind ceilings or walls. Instead, it boldly incorporates exposed elements, emphasizing the relationship between the functional spaces and the building’s technical environment. This approach strengthens the connection between the people who work, rest, and collaborate within the space and the building that houses them.
