BMW Customer Experience Center in Qianhai by ARCHIHOPE
BMW Customer Experience Center in Qianhai by ARCHIHOPE transforms an old workshop into a sustainable, marine-inspired landmark blending industry and innovation.
Located at the heart of Shenzhen’s Qianhai Cooperation Zone, the BMW Customer Experience Center by ARCHIHOPE redefines the relationship between architecture, urban identity, and customer engagement. Spanning 8,155 m² and completed in 2022, the project transforms an old workshop into a cutting-edge destination that blends sustainable design, marine-inspired interiors, and innovative facade strategies.

Urban Context and Transformation
Qianhai has long been the forefront of Shenzhen’s innovation, carrying forward its legacy of reform and openness. Positioned at the intersection of Zhenhai Road and Gangcheng Road, the Experience Center integrates seamlessly with the city’s fabric while reflecting the marine culture of the Greater Bay Area. Rather than demolishing and rebuilding, ARCHIHOPE adaptively reused the existing structure, focusing on challenges such as ventilation, daylighting, shading, and noise control—all while preserving the inherent vitality of the site.

Facade Design and Sustainability
The exterior abandons overly complex forms in favor of stacked cube geometries, echoing shipping containers and industrial textures found in Shenzhen’s port city context. This minimalist yet robust approach aligns with the urban rhythm, allowing the building to change character throughout the day and across seasons.

A passive climate-responsive strategy defines the facade:
- Perforated aluminum plates and PVDF fluorocarbon coatings form a double-layer skin that filters sunlight, reduces heat, and improves airflow.
- Double Low-E hollow glass prevents external heat ingress while retaining warmth during cooler months.
- The composite skin creates a dynamic play of light and shadow, enhancing both visual impact and interior comfort.
This sustainable approach transforms the building into a living architecture that breathes with the city, emphasizing harmony with Shenzhen’s hot, humid climate.

Interior Concept: Setting Sail
If the exterior represents industrial strength, the interior evokes fluidity and motion, inspired by the sea and the spirit of sailing. The design concept, titled “Setting Sail”, captures the dynamism of coastlines, rolling waves, and full sails:
- Ceilings mimic the undulating rhythm of the ocean, creating layered wave-like effects.
- Arc-shaped columns reinterpret sails, dissolving rigid structural boundaries and blending into the spatial narrative.
- Interiors invite visitors into an immersive journey, merging existence and nothingness, openness and intimacy.
The layout promotes fluid circulation, with distinct pathways for sales and after-sales services across two levels, optimizing both customer experience and operational flow.

Customer Journey and Social Spaces
The second floor houses a beverage bar and rest lounge, enveloped by wave-shaped ceilings and stainless steel details reminiscent of rippling water. Daylight filters through grilles, blurring the line between interior and exterior while fostering moments of relaxation and contemplation.
Bookshelves define private nooks for reading or resting, while panoramic views connect customers with the wider city. By night, the illuminated facade resonates with the flow of car lights, embedding the building within Shenzhen’s vibrant urban metabolism.

A Symbol for the Future City
The BMW Customer Experience Center in Qianhai is more than a showroom—it is a sustainable landmark that reflects the cultural DNA of the Greater Bay Area. With its steel exterior, oceanic interior, and emphasis on energy efficiency, the project embodies the spirit of Shenzhen as a city of reform, inclusivity, and innovation.
