Boko House by Hiroyasu Imai: A Harmonious Renovation for Humans and Cats
Boko House by Hiroyasu Imai is a 65m² renovation integrating human and cat-friendly design, maximizing space, functionality, and vertical circulation.
Located in Matsudo, Japan, Boko House is a meticulously designed 65m² renovation project by architect Hiroyasu Imai. This innovative apartment transformation redefines compact living, seamlessly integrating human and feline lifestyles.

A Thoughtful Approach to Small-Space Living
Designed for a married couple and their two cats, Boko House prioritizes functionality, comfort, and adaptability. With limited space—a common challenge in Japanese urban dwellings—the design optimizes every inch to create a spacious yet intimate environment. The renovation introduces a fluid layout with minimal partitions, enhancing depth and flexibility.

A Dual-Perspective Design: Humans and Cats in Harmony
Rather than designing solely for human needs, the project incorporates feline behavior, ensuring that both species can coexist comfortably. A 350mm clearance beneath shelves, kitchen counters, and washbasins serves multiple purposes. For humans, this design enhances spatial depth and airflow, while for cats, it becomes a dynamic playground and a sanctuary for retreat. Additionally, this elevated clearance allows for efficient cleaning with robot vacuum cleaners, promoting a practical and low-maintenance living space.

Vertical Circulation and Interactive Spaces
To enhance movement and engagement for cats, the design includes:
- Integrated steps within shelving units to facilitate climbing.
- Spy-holes in shelves that double as playful hideouts and functional projector spaces for humans.
- Catwalks along beams to encourage vertical exploration, fostering an enriched environment for feline activity.

Seamless Integration of Function and Aesthetic
Boko House masterfully blends spatial efficiency with aesthetic refinement. By reducing unnecessary walls and incorporating detour circulation, the design achieves a sense of openness and continuous flow. The result is a multi-dimensional space where different scales, habits, and activity zones overlap harmoniously, creating a rich living experience.

A Model for Future Small-Space Design
Boko House exemplifies the potential of human-pet-centered architecture, proving that compact homes can still be innovative, functional, and inspiring. With meticulous planning and a keen understanding of spatial dynamics, Hiroyasu Imai has crafted a residence that redefines urban living for both humans and their feline companions.
