Buitenverblijf Nest: An Eco-Friendly Holiday Home Among the Treetops in Arnhem, The Netherlands
Eco-friendly Buitenverblijf Nest: A harmonious holiday home blending architecture, sustainability, and nature in Arnhem.
Nestled within the Hoge Veluwe National Park, Buitenverblijf Nest emerges as a unique holiday home, conceptualized and brought to life by NAMO Architecture and i29 architects. This project, part of a special initiative by the municipality of Arnhem, integrates seamlessly into the natural landscape, offering an unparalleled retreat among the crowns of the trees.

A Folly in the Forest: Artistic and Playful
Buitenverblijf Nest, one of 11 follies developed as holiday stays, embodies the theme of 'camouflage', resonating with the historical significance of its site. Follies, traditionally non-conventional structures with an artistic or playful purpose, here, encourage a harmonious coexistence with nature. Nest stands as a modern interpretation of this concept, designed to be a guest in the landscape rather than dominating it.

Design Philosophy: Sustainability Meets Innovation
Inspired by Nature
The design of Nest is inspired by the archetypal image of a birdhouse, creating a direct connection with its avian neighbors. Its structure, perched on slender legs and composed of staggered layers, not only offers a distinctive aesthetic but also incorporates nesting boxes for birds, woodpeckers, and bats, making it a true nature-inclusive haven.

Sustainable Materials and Energy Efficiency
Constructed with high-quality materials that minimize impact on health and the environment, Nest is a model of sustainable living. It features all-electric installations and a highly insulated building envelope, with solar panels on the roof to provide energy, embodying the principles of eco-friendly design.

The Living Experience: Privacy and Comfort Among the Treetops
The interior of Buitenverblijf Nest is a marvel of efficiency and design, offering privacy and comfort at an elevation of almost 8 meters above the ground. The living area, kitchen, and terrace are situated on the first level, designed to maximize space utilization and provide stunning views of the heathlands. The bedroom area, located in the hood, accommodates a large 4-person bed, ensuring a cozy and intimate setting.

Maximizing Space and Views
Despite the compact nature of the interior, the spatial experience is amplified through long sight lines and a clever layout. Large round windows and wall-to-wall sliding doors offer breathtaking views and a unique closeness to nature that is unparalleled.

A Harmonious Blend of Art, Architecture, and Nature
Buitenverblijf Nest stands as a testament to the possibilities of innovative, eco-friendly holiday home design. It offers a unique retreat that is both an architectural marvel and a sanctuary for wildlife, highlighting the potential for human habitats to coexist beautifully with nature. This project serves as a blueprint for future developments seeking to blend artistic vision, sustainability, and the natural world in harmony.
