Cabin Above the Town by BYRÓ architekti
A minimalist 35 m² cabin by BYRÓ architekti in Sušice, blending privacy, mountain views, open design, and handcrafted construction.
Perched on the edge of Sušice in the Czech Republic, Cabin Above the Town by BYRÓ architekti redefines small-scale living with a minimalist yet poetic design. Completed in 2022, this 35 m² modern cabin blends architecture with craftsmanship, offering a retreat that connects the city with the natural landscape of the Šumava mountains.

Location and Context
Set at the end of a narrow, sloping road, the cabin sits at the intersection of urban and rural landscapes. Enclosed by a subtle fence, it ensures privacy while opening panoramic views of the garden, Sušice town, and distant mountain ridges. The setting makes the cabin both a private sanctuary and a scenic lookout point.

Architectural Design
The cabin is designed for one resident with an open-plan layout. Its core concept revolves around a curved motif that traces the horizon, echoing the form of Svatobor Hill nearby. This curve transforms into an architectural statement, creating continuity between the built form and the surrounding landscape.
Inside, the cabin features a partially elevated sleeping zone, maximizing space while maintaining a sense of openness. Large windows frame natural views, allowing daylight to animate the compact interior. Warm wood finishes, exposed beams, and minimalist detailing create a cozy yet refined environment.

Construction and Craftsmanship
What makes this project unique is the hands-on approach by architects Jan Holub and Tomáš Hanus. Beyond the design, the duo undertook almost the entire construction themselves—crafting the cabin with attention to detail and personal dedication. This intimate involvement bridges the gap between design vision and built reality, resulting in an architecture that is deeply authentic.

Experience and Atmosphere
More than just a small house, the Cabin Above the Town embodies a quiet architectural narrative—a place where landscape, privacy, and simplicity coexist. The cabin becomes both a retreat for reflection and a dialogue with nature, emphasizing how architecture can be modest yet deeply impactful.
