Camposanto Mapfre Chiclayo: A Harmonious Fusion of Landscape and Architecture in Peru
An architectural exploration of Camposanto Mapfre Chiclayo, a cemetery blending landscape, cultural heritage, and light in Peru.
A Cemetery That Honors Landscape and Memory
The Camposanto Mapfre Chiclayo in Monsefú, designed by TERRITORIAL, redefines how architecture can engage with the natural environment and collective memory. Completed in 2023, this project is more than a cemetery; it’s a thoughtful architectural response to the cultural and historical context of Lambayeque, Peru.

Site and Historical Context
A Landscape of Fertility and History
The site is situated within the fertile Chancay River basin, surrounded by rice fields and canals. Dominating the horizon is Cerro El Reque, a natural and cultural landmark. The region is steeped in history, with nearby archaeological sites like Ventarrón preserving some of the oldest murals in the Americas.

Cultural Significance
Cerro El Reque serves as a visual and symbolic anchor for the cemetery. By aligning architectural elements with this feature, the project acknowledges its importance in the region’s collective memory.

Architectural Approach
Integration with the Terrain
The cemetery's design emerges from the ground, respecting the horizontality of the terrain. A wedge-shaped roof subtly disrupts the landscape, while the verticality of the chapel introduces a monumental element that dialogues with Cerro El Reque.

Pathways and Pause Areas
Corridors traverse the site, connecting different components and creating spaces for reflection. Shaded routes and trees accompany burial rites, offering moments of rest and contemplation while framing views of the surrounding landscape.

Design Philosophy
"The Weight of Light"
Light and materiality are central to the design. By manipulating natural light, the architects create spaces imbued with meaning and atmosphere. This approach ensures that the architecture serves as a companion to solemn rituals.

Sustainability and Materiality
The project employs materials that echo the tones of the pre-Hispanic era, reinforcing its connection to the local environment. These choices not only enhance sustainability but also create a sense of belonging for the community.

Execution and Challenges
Precision in Design
The project was meticulously planned, with no modifications during execution. This ensured that the architectural vision remained intact, providing a seamless experience for users and visitors.

A Space for Collective Memory
By integrating graves into a cohesive master plan and designing shaded, interconnected paths, the cemetery becomes a communal space. The emphasis on materiality and light evokes a profound connection between architecture and memory.

A Sacred Dialogue Between Nature and Architecture
Camposanto Mapfre Chiclayo by TERRITORIAL is a masterful example of architecture that respects its environment and cultural history. By harmonizing landscape, light, and materiality, it creates a sacred space that resonates deeply with its community.
