A Minimalist Tropical Retreat Designed for Functionality and Low Maintenance

Nestled in the lush forested landscape of Paraty, Brazil, the Canto Verde House, designed by Kiti Vieira Arquitetura, is a testament to simple living and intentional design. Completed in 2022, this 150-square-meter home was the result of close collaboration between architect and client—both envisioning a modular, low-maintenance residence that blends effortlessly with its natural surroundings.

Sustainable Architecture Rooted in Local Context

Situated in Canto Verde, a neighborhood distanced from the urban bustle of Paraty, the house is purposefully oriented toward the east. This strategic placement ensures optimal natural light and unobstructed views of the rising sun, a feature that guided the layout of all rooms to open toward this direction.

The use of concrete blocks and solid garapeira wood pillars reflects a conscious effort to balance aesthetics with durability. All structural modules were planned using whole concrete blocks, minimizing material waste and eliminating the need for cuts—an efficient and eco-conscious building technique.

Modular Layout for Optimized Living

The home comprises six identical modules:

  • Three serve as the social core (living, dining, and kitchen areas)
  • The remaining three house three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a laundry room positioned between the private quarters

This linear design ensures both spatial clarity and fluid circulation. Elevated from the ground and protected by large eaves, the structure is well-adapted to Paraty’s humid tropical climate, promoting longevity and reducing maintenance.

Smart Light and Privacy Control

While the eastern side remains open to nature, the west-facing façade is more reserved, maintaining privacy from neighboring properties. Carefully chosen glass bricks and high-set windows permit controlled daylight to enter the space while limiting direct visual access—creating a comfortable and secure interior atmosphere.

Natural Harmony and Tropical Modernism

The architectural language of the Canto Verde House is rooted in tropical modernism—minimal, open, and inherently connected to the landscape. The interior features exposed wooden beams, polished concrete surfaces, and large windows that frame the surrounding greenery, establishing a seamless flow between inside and outside.

With its understated elegance and ecological sensitivity, the Canto Verde House stands as a model of modern Brazilian residential design, prioritizing efficiency, comfort, and harmony with nature.
