In the iconic neighborhood of Asa Sul—one of the foundational blocks of Brasília inaugurated by President Juscelino Kubitschek in 1960—the Casa Brasileira Apartment emerges as a vibrant and expressive renovation. Designed by Umdiedro Arquitetura, this 110-square-meter apartment was completely transformed to meet the contemporary lifestyle of a young couple with deep emotional ties to the capital city of Brazil.

The architectural brief was clear: breathe new life into the interiors with a modern, colorful, and cozy atmosphere, while honoring the couple’s roots and personal experiences. The resulting renovation not only updates the spatial layout but also introduces a vibrant, identity-rich palette and tactile materials, making each corner of the apartment both functional and deeply personal.

A Contemporary Transformation Rooted in Brazilian Identity

From the outset, Umdiedro Arquitetura took a bold approach to reimagining the living spaces. The once-segmented layout was reorganized to promote openness, flow, and connection. Structural modifications were made, particularly to the kitchen, one of the bedrooms, and both bathrooms, allowing for a reconfiguration that prioritizes social interaction and modern living.

One of the most impactful changes was the relocation of the kitchen. It was moved to open up the space for a new dining area, now set against expansive windows with serene treetop views. This area seamlessly connects to the newly reimagined living room, where a custom counter fosters both daily use and informal gatherings—perfect for entertaining friends.

Color as a Spatial Tool

Color plays a fundamental role in defining and differentiating the apartment’s interiors. Rather than using physical barriers, Umdiedro opted for a chromatic strategy that subtly delineates functions and moods across the home:

  • Blue defines the kitchen
  • Yellow is introduced through ceramic tiles
  • Wood tones create a warm, grounded dining space
  • Gray articulates the living room and office zone

Each hue was selected not just for aesthetics but for its emotional resonance with the homeowners, making every space feel intentional and personal.

A Playful Display of Details and Infrastructure

One of the apartment’s standout features is the creative treatment of its exposed hydraulic systems. Rather than hiding these functional elements, the architects highlighted them—literally—with bold red paint, transforming pipes and infrastructure into expressive design features. For acoustic insulation and easy future access, these elements were wrapped in blankets and finished with perforated metal plates.

The powder room was also reimagined with rich personality. A greenish-blue coating, decorative artwork, and a Provencal-inspired sink evoke the couple’s global travels, adding another layer of narrative to the design.

A Minimalist Sanctuary in the Intimate Areas

While the social spaces thrive on bold colors and textures, the private quarters embrace a minimalist approach. The former service area and bathroom were reconfigured to create a spacious walk-in closet and relocate the master bathroom, enhancing both function and privacy.

In these quieter zones, the design embraces neutral palettes and minimalist aesthetics:

  • Gray flooring and ceilings
  • Brushed granite surfaces
  • Black accents in fixtures and lighting

The result is a calm and elegant retreat that balances the expressive energy of the public areas.
