Cesariny Exhibition by fala — A Minimalist Installation Celebrating Art, Informality, and Spatial Dialogue

The Cesariny Exhibition by fala in Lisbon reinterprets the traditional gallery model through an installation that is both minimal and provocative. Designed within a highly formalized interior, the project introduces two intentionally informal elements—a continuous wall and a central table—that reshape the way visitors encounter the works of poet and artist Mário Cesariny and his contemporaries. With an exhibition area of 250 m², the design establishes a new spatial and emotional relationship between the artworks, the architecture, and the viewer.

A Spatial Narrative Rooted in Informality

At its core, the installation challenges the rigid, symmetrical character of the existing room. fala introduces two elemental surfaces that create a subtle tension with the formal architecture. The wall becomes an uninterrupted plane for drawings, paintings, and collages, while the table serves as an intimate landscape for smaller works and personal artifacts. These two surfaces, placed side by side, open a dialogue between formal structure and artistic spontaneity—reflecting the poetic irreverence of Cesariny himself.

Material Simplicity with Infinite Expression

Despite its minimal construction, the installation carries a sense of boundlessness. The architects emphasize an “economy of means”, using slender structural elements and pure geometric gestures that feel both light and endless. This simplicity amplifies the presence of the artworks, allowing the room to dissolve into a backdrop that highlights texture, gesture, and the surrealist spirit that defined the artist’s circle.

An Intimate Encounter with Art and Memory

The straightforward layout encourages visitors to move with ease, exploring visual relationships between Cesariny’s works and those of his friends. The table acts as a gathering point—an informal archive where objects and images invite close inspection—while the wall orchestrates a linear, almost cinematic sequence of artworks. This duality creates a rhythm between observation and reflection, turning the gallery into an immersive environment where architecture frames memory, dialogue, and artistic legacy.

Photography and Atmosphere

Captured by Francisco Ascensão, the exhibition imagery highlights the crisp contrast between the stark architecture and the delicacy of the installation. Light, shadow, and the structural precision of fala’s intervention reinforce the exhibition’s layered simplicity, presenting a space that feels both refined and raw.
