Nestled in the scenic mountains of Chachimbiro, Ecuador, near the region’s renowned hot springs, the Chachimbiro House by C/ELC is a masterful blend of tradition and contemporary design. Completed in 2023, this 592 ft² cabin exemplifies architecture that responds sensitively to both its users’ needs and the surrounding landscape, creating a serene retreat that celebrates nature.

The design, led by architects Jorge Andrade Benítez and Verónica León Ron, establishes a profound dialogue with its environment. Inspired by local construction traditions, the project uses adobe, a natural material abundant on-site, which reflects ancestral building techniques. Beyond its cultural significance, adobe offers exceptional thermal inertia, ensuring interiors remain cool during the day and comfortably warm at night, perfectly adapting to the mountainous climate. This connection to the earth reinforces the seamless integration between the cabin and its landscape, making the architecture feel like an extension of the natural surroundings.

C/ELC’s approach is not merely traditional—it reinterprets adobe in a contemporary architectural language. Clean lines, minimal ornamentation, and large windows invite abundant natural light, visually connecting interior spaces with the panoramic outdoors. The strategic orientation of the house provides breathtaking views of the Chachimbiro landscape, enhancing the sense of openness and tranquility.

The spatial organization promotes functionality and comfort. The open-plan kitchen and dining area create a central hub for social interaction, while expansive openings connect directly to the outdoors, encouraging residents to engage with the surrounding terrain. The cabin’s living spaces serve as a welcoming retreat, ideal for relaxation after a day exploring the nearby hot springs.

Beyond the interior, the generous land plot accommodates a recreation area, further promoting outdoor living and direct engagement with nature. This thoughtful interplay between indoor and outdoor spaces reinforces the cabin’s harmonious integration with its environment, transforming the surrounding landscape into an active part of the architectural experience.
