Transforming a Historic Foundry into a Modern Living Space

Nestled in the heart of Cité Griset, a former 19th-century foundry in Paris, this apartment renovation by Mesnil Architectures reimagines an industrial past into a contemporary living space. The project respects the history of the site while embracing modernity, transforming a previously cluttered layout into an open and fluid environment. By reorganizing key functions and enhancing natural light, this industrial loft renovation seamlessly blends heritage with contemporary design.

Preserving Industrial Elements in a Modern Setting

At the core of the renovation is a strategic simplification of the apartment’s existing structure. The space, once fragmented by numerous rooms, has been redefined by consolidating service functions into a dedicated technical zone on the second level. This intervention liberates the living areas, allowing for cross-views that create a greater sense of openness.

A significant transformation involved removing the old freight elevator walls. In their place, a double steel column frame was installed and intentionally left exposed. This element not only supports the new structure but also pays homage to the building’s industrial origins, reflecting the raw metalwork characteristic of the former foundry.

A Harmonious Balance Between Open Space and Defined Functionality

The kitchen, now fully integrated into the redesigned layout, benefits from this newfound openness. It extends into the pantry, accessed through the former elevator opening. A floating work surface, elegantly suspended from the steel columns, reinforces the horizontal lines of the space while concealing functional elements such as the refrigerator. The dining area and double living room are now bathed in natural light, thanks to the expansive windows that frame views of the courtyard and its historic brick columns.

In the private areas, the renovation introduces a sense of lightness and connectivity. A glass partition along the corridor leading to the suite allows daylight to filter through, ensuring that even transitional spaces feel bright and airy. Opposite this passage, a mirrored dressing room responds to the geometry of the space, creating an illusion of depth while enhancing functionality.
