Cité Scolaire Internationale – Campus Ngor by Atelier Kalm: A Contemporary Learning Hub in Dakar
Cité Scolaire Internationale – Campus Ngor, designed by Atelier Kalm, blends sustainable design, privacy, ventilation, and interactive educational spaces.
Located in the emerging urban landscape of Ngor-Ouakam, Dakar, the Cité Scolaire Internationale – Campus Ngor, designed by Atelier Kalm, redefines educational architecture in Senegal. Spanning a total built area of 4,000 square meters, this innovative campus merges primary and secondary education within a single, cohesive environment, responding intelligently to local climate, urban density, and pedagogical needs.


An Architecture of Privacy, Ventilation, and Light
The school complex is characterized by its inward-facing layout, prioritizing student privacy while fostering natural ventilation and daylight penetration. Designed as an introverted structure, it features dual-sided openings that ensure cross-ventilation, leading into semi-open passageways. This configuration not only creates a buffer against the urban surroundings but also enhances interior comfort without relying heavily on mechanical systems.


Shading and Sustainable Facades
A key visual and functional element of the design is its louvered metal shading system, which wraps around the building’s outer façade. This perforated skin allows airflow and filtered daylight into the classrooms while concealing technical equipment, contributing to a streamlined appearance. These smart facades reduce solar heat gain and urban noise, embodying principles of passive environmental control and sustainable design.


Elevated Recreation and Layered Space
In a thoughtful response to limited site space, Atelier Kalm elevated the multi-purpose sports field, situating it above the main playground area. This elevated design expands usable recreational space, offering a sheltered and naturally ventilated zone below that serves both as a gathering space and informal play area. The structural layering optimizes vertical circulation and maintains clear connections between different school zones.


A Central Library for Connection and Transition
At the heart of the campus lies a circular media and library center, a transitional element both symbolically and functionally. This central node bridges the gap between the primary and secondary sections of the school, fostering interaction among students and educators. It acts as a space of learning and social exchange, encouraging cross-grade collaboration and community integration within the school.

Circulation and Fluidity Between Zones
The design prioritizes fluid spatial circulation, with indoor walkways connecting playgrounds, courtyards, green spaces, and quieter back areas. These interstitial spaces promote movement and informal interaction, contributing to a lively and inclusive campus culture. The layout encourages exploration and engagement while maintaining clear boundaries between active and calm zones.

Raw Materials and Earth-Inspired Textures
The architectural expression embraces raw materiality, with exposed concrete slab formworks and mud brick walls forming the dominant palette. Classrooms are flanked by open-air passageways bordered with metal railings, facilitating airflow and light permeability. This use of natural and cost-efficient materials roots the project in its local context, fostering a sense of belonging and warmth.

A School for the Future
With its layered spaces, climate-responsive strategies, and community-centered design, the Cité Scolaire Internationale – Campus Ngor stands as a model for contemporary educational facilities in West Africa. The project not only meets the functional demands of modern pedagogy but also reflects a deep sensitivity to context, culture, and climate.
