Container City - Modular student housing
by René Koenders and Joep Wijnen
Students in urban areas find it increasingly difficult to find a place to live. The rents are rising and the possible living spaces are decreasing. This makes the choice very limited.
Thereby young people are increasingly aware that housing has an impact on the environment. Therefore sustainable living is important for this generation. By offering a second life to sea containers for a place to live, the circular economy is stimulated. Students will value this and will enjoy living in our concept more.
The concept is located near the port of Antwerp. This place is ideal for housing students for the universities of Antwerp, due to the short travel distance to the city center. In addition, the containers fit in to the environment of the port seamlessly.
The modular container concept consists of a base version of 5 sea containers with a stair module. These five containers can be placed in various arrangements according to the environment. For example, the basic modules can be oriented longitudinally along a street or as a cluster in a smaller living area. It is also possible to walk under the construct because the longest container is off the ground. This minimizes the building's total footprint. The private staircase column serves as an entrance for the 5 sea containers. The entrance of this column is at the front of the building in order to minimize the footprint.
The common place for the residents is located at the top of the upper sea container. Residents can meet each other her and be in the outside air. At the bottom there is a public outdoor space. Outsiders can enjoy the vasilities of the building in this area, such as the quiet seating areas under the vegetation.
The many windows on the containers give residents a feeling of spaciousness. the sea containers can be arranged according to the students own taste. From the inside there will be a wide view of the river the ‘’Schelde’’ and the other application of the sea container; namely the transport of goods by sea.
