Coonawarra Willam Aquatic Centre – Ivanhoe Grammar School by Peddle Thorp Architects
The Coonawarra Willam Aquatic Centre blends education, wellness, and sustainability, offering modern pools, learning spaces, and community-focused design.
The Coonawarra Willam Aquatic Centre at Ivanhoe Grammar School in Victoria, Australia, designed by Peddle Thorp Architects, is a striking example of how education, wellness, and sustainable architecture can harmoniously coexist. Completed in 2025, this state-of-the-art aquatic facility spans 2,333 m² and sets a new benchmark for school sports and wellness infrastructure.

Photographed by Victor Vieaux, the centre showcases a modern yet contextually sensitive design that reflects Ivanhoe Grammar School’s commitment to promoting active lifestyles, holistic wellbeing, and community engagement.

Thoughtful Design Rooted in Context
The project began with an in-depth site evaluation, taking into account topography, environmental factors, and the centre’s relationship with the broader campus. A significant native gum tree was preserved, becoming a natural focal point within the landscape. Collaboration with school leadership and stakeholders helped refine the design brief, ensuring the facility would promote student wellbeing, educational enrichment, and community interaction.

Architectural Vision Inspired by Learning and Nature
The design concept draws from the educational context of Ivanhoe Grammar School. The north façade, with its rhythmic structure, evokes stacked textbooks—symbolizing knowledge and growth. Materials and textures harmonize with the historic chapel nearby, featuring muted tones that complement the campus heritage.

A defining architectural feature is the avenue wall, finished in earthy tones inspired by the local landscape. The sawtooth roof design captures natural light, illuminating the main pool hall and enhancing the sense of openness and connection to the outdoors.

Functional Spaces for Health, Learning, and Community
The centre seamlessly integrates core aquatic and educational functions. Key facilities include:
- 25-meter lap pool for training and competition
- Dedicated learn-to-swim areas for all ages
- Multipurpose learning rooms supporting wellness and education
- Comprehensive supporting amenities for students and staff
The layout emphasizes visual connectivity between swimming areas and learning spaces, fostering a holistic approach to student development and wellbeing. Every area balances functionality with comfort, creating an inclusive environment suitable for both structured programs and casual wellness activities.

Completing the Vision: Sustainability and Community Impact
The final stage focused on refining materials, architecture, and landscape integration. The outcome is a welcoming, sustainable aquatic centre that reinforces the school’s values while engaging with the local environment. It serves as a hub for athletic excellence, curriculum innovation, and community connection, encouraging pride, participation, and inspiration.

As Gerard Foley, Principal of Ivanhoe Grammar School, notes:
“This world-class precinct supports not only athletic excellence but also curriculum innovation and community engagement. It has already become a hub for inspiration, camaraderie, and growth.”

Materials and Finishes
The centre employs high-quality finishes and sustainable solutions, including:
- AGROB BUCHTAL Ceramic Tiles (Area Pro and ChromaPlural)
- Laminex, Lysaght, Keystone Linings & Acoustic, and Megasorber for interior finishes and acoustic performance

These materials ensure durability, functionality, and a visually pleasing environment that aligns with the school’s ethos.

The Coonawarra Willam Aquatic Centre exemplifies how thoughtful architecture can enhance education, wellbeing, and community engagement. Through innovative design, contextual sensitivity, and sustainable practices, the centre is more than a facility—it’s a landmark that inspires students, staff, and visitors alike
