Costa Brava House by Mathieson: A Harmonious Blend of Architecture and Landscape
Costa Brava House by Mathieson blends modern architecture with nature, offering panoramic Mediterranean views, seamless indoor-outdoor living, and minimalist elegance.
A Coastal Masterpiece Overlooking the Mediterranean Nestled on a plateau above the rugged coastline of Costa Brava in northeastern Catalonia, the Costa Brava House by Mathieson seamlessly integrates with its natural surroundings. Designed by lead architect Phillip Mathieson and completed in 2019, this stunning residence embraces the Mediterranean landscape while offering a contemporary architectural expression of light, shadow, and openness.

A Design Rooted in Its Environment
Positioned amidst lush pine trees, the house is designed to maximize panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea. From the approach, the structure appears as a sculptural volume, partially shielded by elegant Brise-Soleil screens that filter sunlight and provide privacy. A singular, sandblasted timber door serves as the main entrance, offering a framed glimpse of the breathtaking coastal scenery beyond.

Architectural Concept: Light, Shadow, and Transparency
The design revolves around a continuous horizontal opening that stretches across the entire length of the residence, creating a seamless dialogue between the interior and exterior. A deep overhanging canopy extends outward, uniting the living and sleeping areas into a cohesive architectural form. Strategically placed voids within the canopy introduce dynamic patterns of light and shadow, transforming the space throughout the day as the sun moves across the sky.

Seamless Indoor-Outdoor Living
A defining feature of the Costa Brava House is its ability to dissolve boundaries between inside and outside. Full-height glazed doors in the living wing stack back effortlessly, allowing the Mediterranean breeze to flow through the space. The transition from the interior to the expansive terrace is fluid, drawing the eye toward the infinity-edge pool that visually merges with the sea beyond.

Material Palette: Minimalism Meets Coastal Serenity
The architectural language of the house is defined by a restrained material palette that enhances the natural beauty of its setting. Monolithic white floors reflect the ever-changing light, while raw oak joinery adds warmth and texture. The rendered walls contribute to the home’s sculptural quality, reinforcing its connection to the landscape.

A Vision of Tranquility and Elegance
The Costa Brava House is a testament to Mathieson’s ability to craft spaces that are both dramatic and serene. By embracing the site's topography and maximizing natural elements, the design creates a sanctuary that embodies the essence of coastal living.
