Context and Site

The house is situated on a gently sloping plot atop a natural elevation, providing panoramic views of cultivated fields dotted with isolated trees. Accessed via a road lined with almond trees, the property is shaped by the harsh yet beautiful climate of Cuenca — long, windy winters and hot, dry summers. These conditions influenced both the design and material choices, ensuring comfort and energy efficiency throughout the year.

Design Philosophy

The project draws inspiration from traditional local architecture, using thermoclay blocks for walls, creating a 40cm thick insulated envelope that protects against extreme weather. Small 50x50cm windows frame the landscape like paintings, providing intimate views while maintaining a sense of refuge, reminiscent of a cozy rabbit in its burrow.

Sustainability and Self-Sufficiency

Designed as a self-sufficient weekend retreat, the house relies on a nearby well for water and a solar photovoltaic system for electricity. A biomass boiler coupled with superior insulation ensures rapid heating even during the coldest winters. This approach allows the owners to enjoy the passing seasons and observe the agricultural cycles without dependency on external utilities.

Architectural Composition

The residence is organized into two primary volumes, providing privacy for bedrooms while defining inviting living areas. Strategic walls shield inhabitants from cold north winds, adapt to the site’s topography, and discreetly conceal solar panels. Reclaimed roof tiles and careful masonry give the house an appearance of a historic renovation, seamlessly blending with the rural landscape.

Craftsmanship and Local Techniques

Local masons, led by bricklayer Julián, applied traditional techniques with precision, resulting in a structure that feels timeless. The combination of old-world craftsmanship with contemporary sustainable technology demonstrates Canobardin’s commitment to contextually sensitive and environmentally responsible design.

This Countryside House in Zafra de Záncara stands as a model for rural architecture, showing how modern comfort, sustainability, and heritage can coexist in a single elegant, functional home.
