Crossing the Glasgow

George Square is situated between the Merchant City (the old main town) and the new city centre, next to Glasgow City Council, and is surrounded by many historic buildings. George Square is connected to several roads and is a must for many people on foot. The square is now home to many sculptures of famous people from various periods and is surrounded by lawns and a scattering of trees, where people often lie down to relax and tourists visit. There are also concerts, festivals, protest marches and other events in the square. The square should therefore function as both an open space and a link to the city. After learning about the historic city of Glasgow, it is clear that the development of the city is inextricably linked to the River Clyde, with the people of the city living and growing together with the river. So we can see the history of the river as the history of the city's development, the Clyde contains the common memories of Glasgow's citizens, the glory of Glasgow in the past is reflected in the sunlight on the surface of the Clyde, and the eyes of Glasgow citizens today will be able to focus on George Square in the heart of the city. So we undertook the first iteration of the design for the square. The questionnaires and google map comments revealed that many people were dissatisfied with the existing square, such as the lack of trees and vegetation and the noisy environment. After collating the content of the questionnaires and revising the first draft, I made a second iteration of the square's layout. With each revision, the square took on a new look, but the core of the square remained the same: staying and walking. This suggestive theme echoes the history of the city of Glasgow, constantly moving forward to reach a destination and constantly stopping to retrace one's journey. Glasgow today is an open and inclusive city, where a myriad of activities can be explored and implemented in the square, where everything is possible when people are free to walk across the lawns or sit comfortably in the trees for lunch.
