Cycladic Stone House Design: PetrA Home by React Architects in Paros, Greece
A modern Cycladic stone house design in Paros, Greece, PetrA Home blends local stone, landscape, and poetry into a timeless architectural retreat.
PetrA Home
PetrA Home, designed by React Architects, is a striking example of Cycladic stone house design that harmonizes with the rugged terrain of Paros, Greece. Completed in 2022 and covering 250 m², this vacation home embraces the island’s geological history, using stone from the site itself to create a dwelling that merges seamlessly into the landscape.

Inspiration from the Landscape
The home is situated in Kakapetra, a region whose name translates to “rugged stone.” This area’s rocky terrain, with clusters of prominent geological formations, has historically resisted cultivation, serving instead as grazing grounds for livestock. Drawing from this context, the architects shaped a design that emerges naturally from the land, echoing the traditional dry-stone walls of the Cyclades while offering a modern interpretation.

Architectural Form and Structure
The house’s stone traverse walls define spaces, passages, and viewpoints, directing attention toward the panoramic views over Parikia Bay and the Aegean Sea. These walls intersect and enclose private courtyards on the western side, protecting bedrooms from wind while creating serene retreats.

Integration of Materials and Space
The roof slab, made of exposed concrete, rests on the stone walls, unifying the indoor and outdoor spaces. An expansive pergola extends this shelter toward the sea, blending the courtyard, living areas, and natural surroundings into one continuous sequence. The roofs are covered in soil to support local flora, visually extending the hillside over the structure.

Living with the Landscape
This Cycladic stone house design prioritizes the relationship between people, stone, and nature. The architecture avoids imposing on the arid, rocky environment, instead framing movement and human interaction with the space. The design allows multiple entry points, breaking away from conventional rural dwelling layouts, and creating a flexible, organic living experience.

A Poetic Connection
PetrA Home draws symbolic inspiration from Nobel laureate Odysseas Elytis’ poem “Genesis,” where stone is celebrated as a foundational element of Greek identity. This connection reinforces the architectural approach — a humble, respectful intervention that honors millennia of Cycladic history.

PetrA Home is more than a vacation residence; it is a modern embodiment of Cycladic stone house design, where architecture, poetry, and landscape converge. By using local stone, integrating with topography, and embracing natural light and views, React Architects have created a timeless home that belongs as much to the land as it does to its residents.
