In the heart of Beijing’s historic Nanluogu Lane, the Daoxiangcun Concept Store designed by Blackbird Brand Management reimagines the legacy of a beloved Chinese pastry brand through a bold blend of modern retail design and traditional architectural elements. Completed in 2023, this 195-square-meter space revitalizes the iconic Daoxiangcun name by merging contemporary aesthetics, brand storytelling, and cultural heritage, creating an immersive shopping experience for the new generation of consumers.

Reviving Heritage Through Contemporary Retail Architecture

Daoxiangcun has long been recognized as a symbol of Chinese pastry craftsmanship. The design brief called for a transformation that honors the brand’s historical roots while appealing to the visual and lifestyle expectations of younger, design-conscious customers. The challenge lay in crafting a space that would reflect both the cultural depth of Daoxiangcun and its forward-looking identity.

Blackbird Brand Management approached the project with a clear vision: to create a retail interior that bridges tradition and innovation. Drawing inspiration from both international design trends and the brand’s historical visual language, the team envisioned a store that is at once nostalgic and futuristic.

Adaptive Reuse of a Historic Structure

Situated within a historically significant old residence, the original structure posed both constraints and opportunities. Rather than erasing its past, the design preserves the building’s original wooden framework, beams, and tiled details, celebrating the architectural character of Beijing's hutong neighborhoods.

To open up the space and enhance its functionality, the design team removed the enclosed roof and reinforced the structure using modern steel elements. This architectural intervention not only increases spatial openness but also creates a powerful contrast between the warm textures of wood and the sleek finish of metal, visually articulating the concept of time travel within the store.

A Dialogue Between Materials: Tradition Meets Modernity

Inside, the store is defined by a carefully orchestrated material dialogue. Traditional materials like timber and clay tiles are juxtaposed with stainless steel, glass, and brushed aluminum. This tension creates a layered spatial experience that invites exploration, reflecting the dynamic interplay between heritage and innovation.

Every design move was intentional: historical elements were deconstructed, reassembled, and embedded into new configurations that maintain cultural continuity while achieving contemporary spatial clarity. The result is a visual rhythm that transforms the store into more than just a retail environment—it becomes a narrative space where tradition and modernity collide with purpose.

Spatial Strategy Aligned with Consumer Experience

To adapt to modern consumer behavior, the entrance was redesigned to feature prominent display zones. These not only highlight seasonal pastry collections but also provide areas for brand storytelling. Integrated graphic sign systems derived from archival Daoxiangcun packaging add a layer of authenticity and play a key role in visual merchandising.

The spatial flow is designed to guide visitors through a seamless journey—from the entrance display to the central retail core and finally to the product interaction zones. This spatial choreography enhances both customer engagement and brand immersion.

Graphic Identity Rooted in Heritage

One of the standout features of the concept store is its graphic design system. Blackbird Brand Management drew inspiration from historical Daoxiangcun packaging and motifs, reinterpreting them for modern application across signage, shelving, and point-of-sale areas. This consistent graphic language strengthens the brand's identity while fostering a sense of familiarity and nostalgia.

International Aesthetic with Local Soul

At its core, the design aims to make Daoxiangcun resonate on an international stage without losing its Chinese cultural essence. The fusion of global design sensibilities with local heritage delivers a unique customer experience that positions Daoxiangcun as a forward-thinking yet deeply rooted brand.

Whether you are a long-time fan of Daoxiangcun pastries or a first-time visitor drawn by its architectural elegance, this concept store offers more than a taste of tradition—it offers a multi-sensory journey through time, design, and identity.
