Domehome Expansion by EME157: Innovative Architectural Design in Madrid
The Domehome Expansion by EME157 adds a domed upper floor to a Madrid home, blending cork and zinc for warmth and height.
Overview of Domehome Expansion in Madrid
The Domehome Expansion by EME157 is an architectural renovation project in Aravaca, Madrid. The project adds an upper floor to an existing single-family home, providing an independent apartment for the family’s son while maintaining the architectural balance and enhancing the home’s functionality.

Sustainable Materials and Design Choices
The design by lead architects Silvia Méndez-Vigo Chillida and Gerardo Macarrón Jaqueti uses cork for the outer layer of the new floor. Cork was chosen for its lightweight and insulating properties, contrasting with the original brick structure. The dome structure is topped with zinc, giving the space height while reducing the building’s perceived height from the outside.

Interior Layout and Key Features
The expanded structure has a ground floor with 50 m², including bedrooms and a bathroom. The upper floor, measuring 130 m², is divided into a private area with an additional bedroom and bathroom, and a public area featuring a kitchen, dining, and living room.
A large circular skylight brings in abundant natural light, enhancing the open layout and creating a bright, inviting space.

Modern Interior Design and Material Choices
The interior design is minimalist, focusing on a few high-quality materials. Mortar floors contrast with polished stainless steel countertops, and custom elements like plywood furniture and linoleum finishes create a clean, modern look.
The original concrete beams were left exposed to blend with the new, slender circular metal pillars painted sky blue, creating a seamless flow between old and new structures.

The Domehome Expansion by EME157 demonstrates how thoughtful material choices and innovative architectural design can create a harmonious blend of modernity and sustainability while enhancing both the aesthetics and functionality of a single-family home.
